A devastating explosion at a Cleveland clinic released nitrous oxide gas from burning X ray film. Doctors battled gas poisoning with oxygen and blood transfusions, but many patients and responders died or remained in grave condition as authorities identified the gas and investigated the basement source.
Tennessee and Virginia forecasts describe fair and cooler conditions with frost risk in exposed areas tonight and tomorrow. Readings note yesterday’s highs around 77 and lows near 0. A Cleveland disaster report details a catastrophic explosion, mass casualties, and ongoing inquiries into the fire and gas release with officials from fire marshal to coroner pursuing causes.
Friedrichshafen May 16 The Graf Zeppelin continued westward over southwestern Europe on its second Atlantic crossing to America. The crew and 40 passengers include Mrs Mary Pierce and a female gorilla Susi with Captain Sir George Wilkins among the men. The dirigible departed at 5 567 a m and is expected to reach Lakehurst New Jersey by late Saturday night or Sunday morning, following a route via Gibraltar and possibly the Azores.
Three more victims remained near death at Mt Sinai hospital at noon. Dr George Belcher clinic staff Miss Bermie Eliott clinic cashier and Henry H Lustig attorney were described as critically ill with oxygen treatment ongoing as authorities reported the rapid collapse and removal of bodies within an hour and a half after the fire.
Mrs Pierce, among early arrivals, dressed in beige traveling attire with a feathered hat, plans a covert return to New York society after a staged arrival. Dr Eckener commanded the Graf Zeppelin as it departed in mist, greeting cheering onlookers while stowaways and notable passengers including pianist Gourevitch and inventor Von Kryha drew attention aboard the 4400 pound freight laden craft.
The House opened with general tariff debate and the Ways and Means Committee heard further tariff complaints. The Senate pursued ceasing reapportionment, took up the Len Gent nomination to the Court of Customs Appeals, and advanced the census reappointment bill. The Senate approved an army promotion bill and discussed a $12,000,000 plan to promote agricultural diversification in the South while committees heard testimony favoring power transmission regulation. Plans for a summer recess were announced as farm and tariff bills neared House passage.
Baton Rouge May 16 The Louisiana Senate court of impeachment abandoned the trial of Gov Huey P Long and dissolved by unanimous consent without hearing testimony on charges of high crimes and misdemeanors. Adjournment came after a signed motion for adjournment sine die by fifteen senators who said they would acquit despite the evidence. The adjournment was by oral vote as spectators cheered. Mrs Long attended, smiling, in the gallery.
The Graf Zeppelin flew over Nimes France at 11 40 this morning while heading toward Marseilles. The airship traveled from Lyons to Nimes at about 96 miles per hour, covering 120 miles in ninety minutes. Weather was slightly cloudy with good visibility as thousands watched the silver craft pass overhead.
National guardsmen used tear gas bombs to quell a riot between strikers and mill workers in Elizabethton Tennessee. Over 160 picketers were rounded up and held at Carter county courthouse. Water main cut left the city without water as arrests followed and a union official offered support for repairs.
A report by the Associated Press places the Cleveland clinic hospital blast among the deadliest U S disasters in 75 years. It lists historic tragedies such as the Troquois theater fire of 1903 with 575 dead and the Triangle factory fire of 1911 with 148 dead, among others.
