Final preparations for the giant dirigible Zeppelin to begin its second trip to America were under way in Friedrichshafen. Captain Lehmann led a last trial flight as crew readied the craft for a dawn takeoff toward America with Hugo Eckener directing the voyage and Arctic figures like Nansen expected to participate.
New York American reports Anne Morrow and Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh plan a June 17 wedding at the Morrow home in Englewood New Jersey with preparations underway in North Haven Maine for a honeymoon. Lindbergh to commute by air between New York and Boston before the ceremony as a meadow pasture on the Morrow estate is being prepared for a landing field near Penobscot Bay.
Tennessee mostly fair tonight and Wednesday with little temperature change. Virginia mostly cloudy and warmer tonight and Wednesday with possible interior showers, moderate to fresh southeast winds. Readings show yesterday’s high 87 and low 58 at 6 p.m. for the prior day.
A Des Moines University faculty member and a trustee traveled to Buffalo New York to present the student and faculty side of campus dissension to the Baptist Bible Union Convention. Deans Earl C Callaway and Minor Stevens joined Edith M Redman secretary of the university board and Bible union on the train. Four others left for home with police protection after a Sunday night demonstration ensuing from factional resentment.
Congressman B Carroll Reece announced that Frank H Lovette editor of the Elizabeth ton Daily Star in Elizabethton Tennessee was named executive assistant to the federal radio commission. He was chosen from about fifty applicants nationwide and will confer with the commission on duties tomorrow.
Seven people are dead with property and crop losses feared to reach hundreds of thousands after two days of heavy rains swelled the Trinity River and Polk County creeks. Rescue workers used row boats through the night to evacuate residents, including a family of four drowned in Long Cane while four others escaped after a rescue boat capsized.
In Chicago suburbs on May 14 1971 dog catcher Evanston injury and Oak Park dog catcher John Sullivan both suffer mishaps chasing dogs. Sullivan crashes through a $100 plate glass window at Cranall Motor Car Company while pursuing a mutt. He escapes unharmed though the dog bolts away.
Edward Payson Weston, famed long distance walker, died at age 90 in New York. He crossed 3895 miles from New York to San Francisco in 104 days. Weston served as a Civil War spy, befriended Horace Greeley, and won the 1879 Astley belt in England by walking 550 miles in 141 hours and 44 minutes.
Citizens of Washington county and Emory and Henry College students petitioned Governor Byrd to investigate the fatal shooting of 17 year old J W Kendrick an Emory and Henry student by Abingdon police and county officers. Officers say Kendrick was in a car that ignored orders and were later charged.
A robber posing as a policeman entered the Ohio Savings Bank in Toledo, forced an employee to sit down, and stole 8800. Teller Clark Spitler fired as the robber fled, hitting him behind the car. the robber was captured nearby after running into a building. Edward Payson Weston, a famed pedestrian, dies at 90.
Baton Rouge May 14 The State Senate high court resumed to begin the impeachment trial of Governor Huey P Long on eight counts of official deficiency since taking office two years ago He prepared to offer his defense after a statewide tour denouncing Standard Oil and opposing an occupational tax on refiners The court allowed demurrer on technical grounds but Long has remained silent on his defense strategy and counsel.
Elizabethton Tennessee May 14 More than 250 strikers arrested on the charge of intimidation and escorted to the courthouse square by national guardsmen. They were not placed.
In Elizabethton Tennessee more than 250 textile strikers arrested on charges of intimidation were released before noon after county attorney general Ben Allen spoke. Magistrate George Ryan noted hearings were uncertain as jail space was insufficient. A noisy procession to the square followed the arrests and some detainees planned to proceed unguarded. Guards halted a driver after a guard threatened with a gun and bayonets stood by the road.
In Atlanta on May 1, L W Hayman and B T Tye bid on a stream line straw baby carriage at a street sale. Patrolman Poole intervened and wheel it inside. At the Recorder's court Hayman and Tye pleaded guilty and were fined ten dollars plus costs each.
Alfred te Taylor, 84, famed for the war of roses with his brother and a former gubernatorial candidate, lies seriously ill in Johnson City after collapsing at a church service. Doctors fear pneumonia as he receives care.
In Amarillo Texas Mrs L P Stallworth shot and killed Grace Morrison in front of a hotel after seeking her at a rooming house. Stallworth surrendered to police and said Morrison was a rival for her husband’s affection. The weapon was an old AI calibre pistol. Morrison died en route to hospital. Stallworth and her mother in law remained in custody. Morrison had moved to be with her 12 year old daughter at a local academy.
Washington May 14 AP The Senate near a final vote on its farm relief bill risks a House clash over the export debenture section as debate limits yielded few amendments. Republicans plan to seek return of the measure citing revenue legislation. constitutional controversy seems likely before any final passage.
The House continues tariff debate while the Senate winds up farm relief consideration. Western farm state Republicans discuss hides meat and livestock tariffs. Senate action includes amendments to the farm relief bill and a plea over revenue status. Horace Bester nominated to the federal farm loan board. A bill to authorize presidential conscription in war time is introduced. An inquiry into withdrawal of public lands from oil operations is sent to a Senate subcommittee.
