Boeing weighs chances as Senate decision looms on reviving the SST program after House action redirects $85 million from termination costs. The House Ways and Means Committee endorsed a $9 billion package of Social Security and welfare reforms after rejecting a across-the-board increase. In Moscow, Lev Korenblit a 49 year old physics and math teacher confessed to plotting anti Soviet activities and involvement in the planned hijacking of a Soviet airliner last June. Ten other defendants including Hillel Butman and Viktor Boguslavsky are implicated as allies in theFailed plot to take the plane to Sweden then Israel.
In Nashville the Tennessee House redrew the parimutuel betting measure with 22 amendments and postponed action until Tuesday to review the changes. Senate debate is planned for today on the bill and on the state appropriation, with civil service reform also on the schedule. Gov. Dunn has pledged a veto if the bill passes.
The U S Postal Service reorganizes 4000 to 7000 post offices in 11 states, moving Memphis based operations into a new southern region. J Howard Glehy notes Tennessee Alabama and Mississippi will join Texas Louisiana Georgia Florida North Carolina South Carolina Oklahoma and Arkansas.
