The House rejected Roosevelt's plan to make the Civilian Conservation Corps permanent by a 385 to 7 vote. Insurgents kept the agency on a temporary basis, ratifying yesterday's tumultuous session. The measure would have set CCC strength at 200,000 youths and veterans plus 5,000 from territories.
Weather summary notes cloudy conditions and cooler temperatures across most parts tonight and Thursday. East portions may see varying cloud cover with intermittent precipitation chances. Forecasters predict unsettled skies, cooler interior temperatures, and light winds overall.
In Belfast on May 12 workers and police clashed during a Republican demonstration against coronation decorations on Falls Road factories. Protestants sang God Save the King as Catholics sang the Irish Free State anthem, and police reinforcements were called to restore order. Also, U.S. immigration figures show 44,307,496 entrants in fiscal 1936, up from 41,730,336 the prior year, including transients and immigrants.
Nashville May 12 Senator Fletcher R Morgan Hamilton introduced a bill allowing any county to hold a referendum on legalizing liquor manufacture within its borders. If approved by a majority, manufacturing would be legal but sales would still be prohibited in Tennessee. A 1000 dollar privilege tax would apply to state and county, plus city tax if a distillery is in a city. The measure stems from Motlow’s request, with a note on a long missing mail bag found in Edgewood Texas.
London May 12. The coronation drew 4 million people into a grand pageant through the capital. George VI and Queen Elizabeth walked to Westminster Abbey as crowds cheered from Buckingham Palace to the Abbey and back. In Parliament Square, observers watched the ceremony with imperial pride and hope for the new reign.
In Westminster Abbey Queen Mary, mother of George VI, yields to emotion during her son’s coronation. The scene recalls her own 26 years earlier when she became queen, riding in the golden state coach with King George V.
Rome observers report Italian newspapers and radio largely ignored the coronation of King George VI. A Dublin dispatch noted the event while Stefani issued a brief London datelined notice. In Rome a special service occurred at the English church with Ambassador Sir Eric Drummond among attendees.

Dr Claude R Wood of Knoxville retires as president, warned against state dentistry while Barbeque trip into Great Smoky Mountains National Park noted. Chattanooga will host next year’s convention with dates not yet set.
County Attorney Coleman Wright was authorized to conduct a juvenile court inquiry into the death of 58 year old Charles Busey after the grand jury dismissed an involuntary manslaughter charge against 17 year old Faye Puckett. Busey was struck on the head at a restaurant.

Saulsbury, 18, faces first degree murder for fatally shooting a farmer's wife and wounding her husband. prosecution plans to seek the death penalty. The docket includes many drunk driving cases under a new statute, plus prior continuations under the old law.
Nashville May 12 The Senate Finance Committee failed to act on general appropriations and debt financing as seven days remained. Finance Commissioner Walter Stokes Jr said a cut from 647000 to 507000 would cripple tax collections, while budget officials faced sharp criticism from Senator Elmer Davies and others. The meeting ended without decisions and delays loom on the administration program.

Edward listens to King George VI’s coronation as Britain hails the new king with lavish ritual, while Windsor’s future plans remain unsettled.
From Westmin Abbey inside the palace crowd watched Princess Elizabeth and her six year old sister Margaret Rose captivate the scene before the coronation. Margaret Rose drew smiles with shy antics while Elizabeth stood beside Queen Mother Mary in diamonds and regal gowns.
