Citizenship Schools Multiply in the South Across Highlander
In Monteagle Tennessee AP Myles Horton says over 23 citizenship schools are in operation as part of a regional program linked to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Highlander trained 82 teachers and plans to enroll adults by 1961 with 350 teachers to organize evening classes on reading writing and voter registration. Twenty schools already operate in Savannah Gay area and West Tennessee groups start three more. Horton also said Highlander authorized lawyers to seek Supreme Court review of its charter revocation, with the Tennessee Supreme Court upholding a lower court finding that Highlander sold beer without licenses and operated for Horton’s personal profit, while noting a separate count about integrated workshops possibly violating segregation laws. The school may operate during appeal.
