The city election board announced two day supplemental registration at City Hall for June 3 aldermanic race. Voters must have paid 1938 poll tax by May 4 and those already registered in general elections must re register for city voting.
Generally fair tonight and Thursday with cooler conditions later. Velaglina day shows slightly cooler tonight and cooler Thursday and Thursday night.
Nashville May 10 The state personnel division reports a payroll reduction of 22860-213 percent from January 1 to April 1 and 22 appointments along with four dismissals were released. The highway department led cuts with 87 942 job turnover and lists several specific appointments and dismissals.
Nine civilian flying schools were selected to provide primary training for up to 4500 novice pilots over the next two years. The Army aims to expand its pilot corps, tapping schools that offer extended graduation hours and charge more than typical college costs. The program follows Lindbergh’s Paris flight and reflects a surge in private aviation education.
Soft coal operators and miners studied a definite formula to resume closed mines in 26 states. Federal conciliators Dr John R Steelman and James F Dewey led sessions with operators and United Mine Workers CIO as they pressed for a solution by nightfall amid no clear signs of an immediate restart.
Washington May 10 Chairman Steagall urged extended use of the U S gold hoard to expand the currency. He proposed a 40 to 1 gold basis and said currency expansion could reach 37 billion dollars. Critics noted much of the gold is foreign owned. Patman cited the 2 billion stabilization fund as potentially sufficient.

Admiral Yarnell reports 66 passengers and crew saved from the British steamer Lindenbank after it struck a reef and sank 3,000 feet deep near Arena Island. They were taken to Iloilo by the destroyer Pope with no deaths or injuries.
Louis Greenfield testified in Bronx county court that he killed his 16 year old son Jerome because he loved him. He said he chloroformed the boy on January 12 and described years of struggle with the boy who was not normal and suffered fits. The defense rested as Greenfield spoke with emotion about the boy’s birth and his hope for a cure.
London May 10 Viscount Astor says a conference with Nazi pistols pointed at one’s head leads to no good end as Britain seeks a new formula to win Soviet Russia for the Allied front. A Times letter published expresses his views while denying links to a so called Cliveden set once accused of appeasement.
Washington May 10 Somewhat buried beneath presidential talk is speculation about Secretary of State Hulls prospects in 1940. His inter national role during crises and his trade policies make him a possible compromise candidate. Hulls southern appeal and need for Roosevelt backing are noted, with critics and boosters weighing his foreign policy record. Age is cited as a drawback.
Kansas City May 10 delegates at the Methodist uniting conference debated Landon’s demand to drop the conscientious objector clause and opposed shipments of munitions to Japan. The 8 million member unity project moved toward finalizing a single church, while other measures questioned foreign obedience clauses.
Five stated opponents of State Democratic Leader Frank Hague won Bayonne City commission seats in a high turnout election, marking a dramatic local political shift. The vote set a historic Hudson county turnout.
Kentucky Governor A B Chandler announced that if eastern Kentucky coal mines are not operating by Monday he will send about 700 National Guardsmen to protect workers in Harlan County. He framed the dispute as a fight over closed shops and penalty clauses led by John L. Lewis and the UMWA CSO, while affirming a right to work without intimidation.
King Chester Lawrance and Queen Elizabeth Farnsworth arrived in Memphis to begin a five day Cotton Carnival reign. Their 106 member court escorted by officials celebrated with fireworks and trumpets as Carnival President Russ Writchard crowned the couple under a cotton kingdom banner.
Sheriff Lon Jordan and County Attorney Richard Harless left for Phoenix with Robert M. Burgunder Jr as a suspect in the killings of auto salesmen Jack Peterson and Ellis Koury. The bodies were found shot in the desert near Phoenix after the pair were demonstrators' customers. Burgunder said he drove the car to Johnson City where he was arrested. Extradition papers from Acting Gov. Harry M. Moore of Arizona reached Jordan.
Heavy crop and property damage was reported in scattered sections of south Louisiana and Mississippi from severe hailstorms. Heaviest losses hit Wilkinson Amite and Copiah counties in Mississippi and areas near Bunkie Louisiana. Bean crops in Wilkinson and Amite were hit hard, cabbage and tomato crops were flattened at Crystal Springs, and cotton, corn and sugar cane losses were noted with replanting needed in Bunkie area.
In Commons Chamberlain outlined Britain's request for Russian military aid in eastern Europe only if British French forces are already engaged. He clarified no Soviet commitment to intervene independent of Britain and France actions. Tass noted the proposals were one sided and Britain pressed for a British French Soviet alliance as a counter to Mussolini.
James M. McCormack, new Tennessee Commissioner of Insurance and Banking, outlines objectives for his administration. He aims to require fair contracts by insurers, oversee companies and agencies, building and loan associations, loan firms, and maintain a fire prevention bureau. He previously served under Governor Browning and was reappointed by Governor Cooper.
