Special to The Times Greeneville May 3 Joel N Pierce Republican candidate for congressman from Tennessee first district opened his campaign in Greeneville with an audience from every county. Pierce pledged to do his very best and other district representatives spoke in support. Attending from Kingsport and nearby were Lewis Foster S W Pierce John F Blevins and H L McNeil.
Washington May 8 The Board of Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church opened efforts to solve the churchs most critical issue the world service movement and its missionary work A panorama of world affairs from returning foreign delegates guided the discussion on reviving interest and securing both support and funds for foreign missions continued on page five.
Washington May 8 A new line of attack against the railroad labor bill formed as a motion to recommit the measure to the Senate interstate commerce committee. Opponents plan to rally next week and seek adjournment to marshal forces. Senator Watson claimed President Coolidge favored the bill. Senator Curtis opposed any amendment. Senators King Reed and others attacked the bill, with King saying strong lines favor it and minor roads oppose. Watson said it was drawn by workers and carriers. Reed said operating managers oppose it while financial managers favor it.
Washington May 8 Republicans locked horns during a House debate on farm relief legislation. Chairman Madden and Haugen clashed over funding and policy while Rep Tincher of Kansas attacked Murphy of Wheaton Minnesota for alleged unfair propaganda and alleged impeachable conduct in supporting the Haugen price stabilization bill.
Alfred Jordan, once claiming the world checker championship, died yesterday at Gallinger hospital after being removed from the Salvation Army hotel. The 63 year old, who registered in Detroit, bore a gold medal watch fob inscribed checker champion of England 1897. Relatives in Spartanburg, S. C. sought. The report also notes a bank holdup in St Louis with five masked gunmen escaping with up to 12,060 dollars.

A sub committee is elected to study proposals while church leaders pray for guidance amid distrust. The debate centers on articles of religion and the obligation of ministers who dissent.
London reports gloom as Britain endures a general strike now in its first week. Trades Union Congress rejects four million rubles from the Russian Red International Federation and may deploy a second line of defense comprising electrical and gas workers to widen the strike. Premier Baldwin refuses talks while miners and owners remain at odds.
Pairbanks Alaska May 8 Captain George W Wilkins of the Detroiter Arctic expedition, with Major Thomas G Lanphier, left in the Detroite piloted by Sergeant Wiseley for Point Barrow to scout the Arctic sea route in search of Jamail. They plan a four hour northward and four hour southward flight, with a day prep at Barrow before recon. The party carries 380 gallons of gasoline at Barrow aboard the Alaskan plane. The Detroiter is a three engined craft. 500 gallons of gasoline were aboard when it wrecked Thursday during takeoff for Barrow.
London reports women across society joining efforts to ease suffering from the general strike. Commandant Mary Al Jen leads first aid volunteers as recruitment slows to catch up with applicants. Shelling planes and cars aid transport with Lady Rhondda funding and Drummond notes Clyde women feel bitter about the strike.
