Historians assumed supervision of an excavation near Detroit’s Fort Lernoult site after workmen uncovered wooden structures. The Detroit Bank and Trust Co. and builder Sam Mins Hoff invited historians to continue the dig and authenticate pieces tied to the fort’s historic era.
Students from Ross N. Robinson Senior High School earned 27 blue ribbons at a band festival sponsored by East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra. Winners included solos and ensembles led by Linda Murray, Mary Gustafstin, Joyce McConnell, Gail Tom Owens, Jennylyn Harti, and Janice Litton among others.
In Darien Georgia UPI reports further arguments on a petition to move the second divorce trial of billionaire Richard J Reynolds and his third wife Muriel Reynolds from McIntosh County. Judge John K Whaley suggested an early ruling after Monday testimony. If granted, the trial moves to another Georgia county. if denied, jury selection proceeds and Reynolds may testify. Eight jurors showed bias in Reynolds favor, leading to their removal and the addition of 26 veniremen. Atlanta attorney El Smythe Garbrell argued moving the case would be difficult for McIntosh residents. Also from New York Gordon Gran 88 a painter of ships and seafarers died Monday in a rest home.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers reported a small forest fire in the Bone Creek valley 22 miles north of Gatlinburg under control. The blaze, likely sparked by lightning, burned about 15 acres of timberland since Saturday as a crew of 20 fought it.
