Beverly Hills notes that Warner Baxter, the film star famed as the Cisco Kid, died at 62 after years of arthritis and related complications. A brain operation and pneumonia hastened his end, following a long career marked by early Oscar success.
United Nations members move toward an arms embargo on Red China with Britain and France softening stances. The United States filed a formal embargo proposal at a sanctions committee meeting, with a vote expected by week’s end or Monday. In Kingsport, Paul B. Bellamy of Associated Transport announces candidacy for Board of Mayor and Aldermen. six candidates now compete for two four year terms.
Nashville officials report the State Board of Pardons and Parole rejected the clemency bid for Herman Lee Jones 27 of Fill Branch Washington County in the 1945 Gatlinburg tourist court slayings. Jones faced a 90 year sentence along with co defendant Charles Perry 70 operator and Josie Law 43 housekeeper. The board secretary Priestley Miler announced the decision after a meeting with Jones brother sweetheart and attorney.
A Tennessee Bristol report notes cigarette tax evasion across stores and creates a contrast with a national defense tax benefit program. Senate Banking Committee members accuse big corporations of receiving favorable treatment in five year tax amortization for new defense plants while small firms lag behind. House hearings also begin on extending Wage Price Control powers as the tax debate widens.
Willie McGee, condemned for rape, died in the electric chair in Mississippi amid a flurry of appeals from Gov Wright and federal judges. The case drew international attention as civil rights groups sought clemency and communications labeled as inspired by Communists flooded the governor.
United Mine Workers of America District 50 staged a picket at Kingsport Laundry on West Sullivan Street to press for formal recognition. The United States rejected Russia s proposal to draft a Japanese peace treaty with four major powers including Communist China. A State Department spokesman said Washington will continue current preparations for a settlement with or without Russian participation, to avoid any chance of a veto.
Actress Mary Astor attempted suicide at her Encino residence early today. Police said she was found unconscious with sleeping pills nearby and was hospitalized for stomach pumping before transfer for further treatment. Authorities identified the incident as an attempted death by her own action. Father William J. Smith was summoned to the scene.
Holliston Mills of Tennessee resumed operations Monday as all employees reported for work after a three week strike. A picket line around the plant was abandoned after the union, CIO Textile Workers Union of America Local, notified that the walkout would be halted. Holliston was the only plant in the area affected by the walkout.
Secretary of Defense Marshall testified that United Nations troops in Korea are barred from approaching within 15 miles of the Russian border. He said MacArthur was ordered to confine operations to Korea and not to cross into Manchuria, with limited ability to retaliate if attacked outside Korea.
A three nation push by the United States Britain and France seeks an immediate cease fire in Palestine with Syria and Israel. The draft resolution requests co sponsorship from other countries as turmoil continues along the demilitarized zone. Israel accuses Syria of armed aggression and infiltration, while Moshe Sharett says Israel will not comply while Syrian forces stay in the buffer area. Frontiers reports a quiet region after an early morning attack near Ein Gev on the Sea of Galilee.
Allied troops pushed north along the 100 mile Korean front for a second day while patrols hunted Reds in the vacuum between forces. Reports spoke of growing Communist build ups in Red Korea and a lack of Russian tanks and planes feeding spring offensives. West to east, skirmishes continued near Kimpo Peninsula and Seoul gateways as UN patrols probed Red defenses and armored columns moved toward Chunchon. Northwest of the Red held city airmen noted considerable Red troop build ups as Fifth Air Force flew hundreds of sorties.
President Truman urged the nation to reject Gen Douglas MacArthurs Korea proposal predicting a risk of a wider war and death blow to Americas fighting spirit. He spoke as he marked his 67th birthday and the sixth anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany, awaiting reaction to his stance. Republican senators signaled scrutiny from the start as Truman pressed the administration line in a nationwide radio address.
A three man mediation panel will begin today to settle a wage dispute that sparked a five week strike by 40 000 southern textile workers. The panel includes Francis O Clarkson chairman of Charlotte representing the public Taylor B Durham of Charlotte secretary of the Southern Hosters Manufacturers Association for management and Ray C Nixon of Atlanta regional director of the CIO United Rubber Workers for labor. Conciliator D Yates Heafner of Charlotte will be executive assistant.
