New York announces W C McHorris director of recreation in Kingsport joins a 15 member Southern District Advisory Committee of the National Recreation Association. The ten state area includes Alabama Florida Georgia Kentucky Mississippi North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Virginia and West Virginia. The group advises on district services to improve opportunities for local residents. McHorris currently recovers from a heavy attack suffered last Sunday.
Kingsport may reconnect Bays Mountain Reservoir to the city water system as a civil defense measure for emergencies. M. L. West of the water department says the reservoir, once Kingsport’s main supply, would require repairs to long idle pipelines to reestablish a reserve supply.
Washington reports the administration’s labor law revision bill was up for a critical Senate vote amid firm Democratic opposition. The outcome could determine whether the proposal advances or stalls.
Mr and Mrs Roscoe Ritchie of 586 Bloomingdale Road prepare to welcome two young men home from Korea. One is their son Sgt Roscoe Jr 24 the other is Huhng Bulimi Kim 17 a Korean orphan adopted to attend high school then medical school in America. They met at a Korean Air Force base and plan to separate planes to meet in San Francisco.
Washington dispatches report Secretary of State John Foster Dulles will address the nation at :30 tonight from a position of strength at home and abroad. France's Lauiel government endorsement of the Laniet armistice terms signals a continued hold on Vietnam’s Red River delta. Eisenhower cites progress toward a southeast Asian collective security pact, while Britain edges toward talks on united action before Geneva knots.
In Kingsport City Court a radar speed reading led to convictions. A Route 1 man was fined 10 dollars after Patrolman Porter testified radar clocked him at 40 mph on West Center Street. The defendant claimed he was following traffic and was not certain of guilt. Also a 54 Church Hill man pled guilty to speeding and three others forfeited $15 bonds.
Wise County dedicates J. J. Kelly High as cornerstone placed inside a copper box for 100 year opening. About 700 students and 150 guests attend amid rain as Dr. J. J. Kelly named after county educator. Governor Thomas B. Stamey to address Pound and Big Stone Gap ceremonies following. Contractors Kingsport firm representatives attend, with Dr Dowell J Howard present to introduce Governor Stanley at the Big Stone Gap Negro high school dedication.
Makeup session for second grade students who missed polio vaccinations in Kingsport area schools. Judge West suspended a $20 fine. fines include $5 for speeding in a school zone and $4.50 for blocking a lead-charging zone. Final brood sampling and third animal shots to be given in county and city schools on June 2 and June 15 16.
Premier Laniel announced to the National Assembly that Dien Bien Phu has fallen after a 20 hour battle. Vietminh forces swept four outer posts, seized the southwest corner, and breached the fortress while Gen. De Castries led counterattacks. Isabelle held out briefly. Dien Bien Phu now a symbol of free world resistance.
Washington reports Sen McCarthy condemned an Army charge during a Senate Investigations subcommittee hearing. Ray H Jenkins and Secre tary Stevens testified on the luncheon dispute involving Roy Cohn and others tied to Pvt David Schine. McCarthy pressed whether the charge was true or fake and accused Stevens of being used by others.
Corpus Christi Texas dispatch reports a rescue party of Navy and Air Force officers began a climb to Mexican Hill to reach a PBM crash site. Ten crew members were aboard the missing flying boat. a helicopter reached wreckage but could not land due to rugged terrain. A medical team arrived from Ellington Air Force Base as the search continued.
Kingsport Civil Defense officials headed by 5S. W. Macbeth deputy director and George W. Anderson commander joined city manager D. W. Moulton for a briefing on air defense. They traveled from Kingsport to Dobbins Air Force Base Marietta Georgia by Air Force plane with Knoxville Chattanooga and Nashville officials. The briefing was held at the headquarters of the 35th Air Division at the Dobbins Base.
