Youth at large faces charge in Kingsport area
Kelley Fields, 21, found badly beaten in a car on Roller Street, is in critical condition with a fractured skull. He had recently been released from custody for non payment of a fine. Investigators say Fields was beaten at Highland Park and unnamed assailant fled. Jack Click and George Tiggs were arrested on felonious assault warrants. both remain jailed on 2500 bond as police probe the case for tomorrow’s hearing.

Bank auditor testifies in Davis trial over false bank reports
Asheville May 5 AP W S Coursey a bank accountant testified in the trial of Wallace S Davis former bank president C N Brown and Dr J A Sinclair former directors of the defunct Central Bank and Trust Company that the September 24 report overstated deposits and omitted overdrafts and public funds. He said the bank overstated deposits by about 2 175 million and hid overdrafts at Biltmore-Green Bank and Hendersonville First Bank. He noted true public fund deposits were 7 294 352.98 versus 5 432 039.99 in the report, with a portion in a special account for Asheville and county.

Ben Jones Hooper eldest son of former Governor Ben W Hooper was killed in a Monday afternoon road accident near Newport Tennessee. His car left the Knox ville highway struck a pole after veering off road embankment. He operated a local garage and is survived by his parents widow three sisters and two brothers. Seiji Yoshihara Japan’s famed birdman prepares for the third leg of his goodwill flight to the United States over the North Pacific. With 665 miles completed of a 6268 mile route, his all metal seaplane refueled at Nemurom and awaits a 273 mile leg to Tokotan Urup Island. Nashville May 5 Conversion to Christianity of Chiang Kai Shek the Nationalist President of China and of Chief Tunda and 300 of his tribesmen in the Congo Belge were cited as outstanding missionary triumphs of the past year by the Methodist Episcopal Church South General Secretary W G Cram reported at the opening session of the 85th annual meeting. He noted the baptism of Chiang in Shanghai the completion of the Moore Memorial church there and revival led by Rev H T Wheeler. He warned of reduced revenue and outlined proposed budget cuts for 1982. In home missions 1000 converts and a new church were reported in Kingsport Tennessee.
