The Kingsport School Board will meet Thursday at 7 30 p.m. in the Superintendent's office at Dobyns Bennett High School. The Quarterly Court Commerce Committee will meet at 7 p.m. at the courthouse.
Local groups sponsor rummage sales and collections across May 3 to 5. TOPS Chapter 146 hosts a daylong rummage and white elephant sale May 3 in Sevier Recreation Center band room. Mafair United Methodist Church basement collects clothing May 3 and 4 for Church World Service. Church Women United plans May Fellowship Day May 4 at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church. Fall Branch Raritan Gub stages a chicken barbecue May 5 at Fall Branch School with plates 1.50 and proceeds for building a community center. Welcome Wagon Club holds a rummage sale May 5 at the old Hart Tile Building on Cherokee Street. Kingsport Area Licensed Practical Nurses Association hosts a rummage sale May 5 at the old Jennings building on Lynn Garden Drive. Mountain View United Methodist Church runs a regional flea market May 5 featuring rummage items and baked goods with lunch. Screenings note: Terrace Lolly Madonna ends Thursday. State Walking Tall, Martin The Sounder, and Strand The Nelson Affair end Thursday. Blue Oyster Cult performs a rock concert May 4 at 8 pm in Bristol. CBA Productions presents Neil Simon’s Star Spangled Girl May 4 and May 5 at 9 pm at the Fine Arts Center. reservations at 246-9351.
Patrol records list Pat Brown of Slatland driving Gary Dale Cart and Dorothy Stim for intoxication and improper conduct with license issues. Forfeitures include ten dollars for orderly conduct and thirty four to fifty dollars for speeding, with additional penalties for resisting arrest and failure to yield.
Washington UPI reports Phase IT of the meat boycott scheduled for Saturday amid weak public backing versus last month. The National Consumers Congress backs the protest, but local groups lack a unifying rallying point. Some plan picketing or store boycott. New York City groups push toward citizen oversight and meetings with officials.
In Los Angeles UPI reports the Pentagon Papers case may end as Judge Matt Byrne orders briefs on possible mistrial or dismissal amid White House Watergate entanglements. He audits government files and pursues a personal probe while trial testimony nears completion.
San Francisco United Press International reports Marilyn Chambers, star of Behind the Green Door, says her All American Mother box image on Ivory Soap will vanish as Procter & Gamble declines renewal. She cites acting ambitions, defends explicit sex scenes, and cites past earnings and future projects including Resurrection of Eye opening in July.
The Pentagon asks Congress for an extra 490 million dollars within a 2.8 billion federal supplement to broaden transfers for Indochina War costs. The move follows Senate warnings about funding for military activity in Cambodia and faces a likely House Appropriations vote after Democratic pressure to curb federal spending on the war.
Washington UPI reports a Senate resolution urging a special Watergate prosecutor remains on the books after a tense vote. Five senators backed it. Nixon furious at Sen. Percy who sponsored it, while House momentum stalls under Rodino. Elliot Richardson to decide on administration pursuit.
A candlelight march and an all night vigil will be held on the Kent State University campus tonight in memory of four students killed by guardsmen during a May 4 1970 anti war demonstration. The four were Allison Krause of Pittsburgh Jeffrey Miller of Plainview New York William Schroeder of Lorain and Sandra Scheuer of Youngstown.
