Thousands escape rising Mississippi flood in northern and central Louisiana as relief boats planes and rail stations deploy to feed clothe and shelter refugees. Red Cross sets up wireless communications to coordinate aid across flooded areas and camps.
Floodwaters from the Red and Mississippi rivers breach levees and advance into northeastern Louisiana and beyond. Crews fight the line near Vidalia while a relief squad evacuates residents from lowlands as the crest nears Vicksburg. Crisis looms between Delta Point and Deer Park. Natchez deploys a rescue fleet as towns in Cordelia, Catahoula, and Avoyelles parishes already face desertion.
Lydia Locke, former opera singer and five time spouse, has married Carlos Marinov and is honeymooning in Jugoslovia. The marriage follows a cable report via New York American. Her first marriage to A W Talbot ended after his death in Reno. she was acquitted.
Secretary of War Amaro announced further punishment for the band that attacked the Guadalajara train two weeks ago. Rebels divided into groups of 150 each were overtaken by federals at Los Pastores and La Culebra with 39 killed and over 20 wounded. Troops captured 126 horses along with guns and ammunition.
London dispatch reports Dr Benjamin Wheeler former president emeritus of the University of California died recently after a long career as an educator and leader at Berkeley. The Vienna report notes his pivotal role in shaping the university and its institutions.
Kingsport is urged to raise its Red Cross flood relief quota from 1000 to 2000 dollars after national totals were increased to address needs of more than 200000 flood refugees. J Fred Johnson, local chapter chair, received a telegram from James L. Fieser, acting national chairman, reflecting Hoover's recommendation.
Roanoke Virginia May 3 Walter L Boothe remains on artificial respiration after nearly 12 days in hospital. A bedside worker said he is deteriorating and may not recover as doctors fear the end is near. In Louisville Kentucky preparations for the Southern Baptist Convention open with the Women’s Missionary Union registration and W M U training school underway as delegates arrive.
Nashville May 3 A total of six vetoed bills lie on the House calendar awaiting a rumored quorum expected to appear tomorrow. Gov Peay commended fighting spirit as lawmakers show moribund attendance. The governor vetoed the reorganizaton bill raising state expenses by 44200 yearly and new salary hikes. Other vetoed measures include Wiggs bill, a code commission proposal and three local bills. Nashville reports a spoof bid where Governor Peay resigns for one hour on May 3 to be replaced by 14 year old Boy Scout Beverley Burney as acting governor. Charlton Frierson, another scout, takes over as secretary of state and comptroller, with Davidson county and Nashville similarly swayed by a youth-led power shift.
Chicago faces a near eight million dollar deficit by year end. Mayor Thompson outlined the risk to payrolls and city services as Alderman John Clark warned of salary cuts or school closings without new funds. A large firm has threatened to halt city-supplies payments amid under assessment claims. A mayoral conference with finance and tax leaders was convened to seek remedies. In Fairmont, six more Everettville mine disaster victims were found, bringing the dead to 24 and leaving 70 miners missing. Rescuers advanced 4,000 feet into gas-filled tunnels, but officials fear no escape for entombed workers.
The fifteenth annual meeting of the US Chamber of Commerce opened in Washington with a program on the nation s business. A joint session with the Pan American Commercial Conference will feature President Coolidge around 9 p m in the Washington auditorium, broadcast by over thirty stations.
Weather notes show Virginia expect increased clouds with showers late tonight or Wednesday, fair tonight in the southeast, and slightly warmer tonight. Tennessee faces showers tonight and Wednesday, with warmer tonight and cooler Wednesday. Readings taken at 6 p.m. daily by O L Bunn at the local weather station, yesterday highs at 79 and lows around 40, rainfall to 6 p.m. yesterday.
Nashville May 3. The Southern Methodist College of Bishops in session here this morning announced adopting a plan to reorganize. Bishops will preside at semi annual college meetings by seniority of service, each bishop in charge for a period.
In New York on May 3 the Ruth Snyder murder trial saw a near clash when Assistant District Attorney Froessel pressed her on prior statements. Judge Scudder halted a courtroom scuffle as Snyder and co defendant Henry Judd Gray prepared for further examination. Crowds were smaller due to weather and Snyder’s occasional absence from the stand.
In Atlanta on May 3 Professor H A Roop of Wheaton Illinois told the World Christian Fundamentals Association that a materialistic view of the universe drives student personal crisis reports. He cited a survey among students teachers and clergymen pointing to atheistic education and social ills as factors. Roop urged a return to creation beliefs and Christ as the real need of colleges.
