A violent tornado at Rye Cove High School near Clinchport Virginia at 1 pm CT demolished the seven room frame building killing 12 children and one teacher and injuring about 90 others. Rescue crews from Kingsport Gate City and Bristol joined in relief efforts as homes stores and a church were damaged and emergency hospitals formed.

Youth Found Not Guilty In Family Slaying Case
Jacob Vanderburg, 17, was acquitted by a Gaston superior court jury of murdering five family members whose bodies were found December 25 in a razed home near Gastonia. Escape from Henderson jail linked to sister-in-law shooting
