Washington April 20 Congress stalls on major reforms as leaders push Roosevelt lending spending plan toward an early vote. Lawmakers aim to finish the tax revision, advance public works and relief bills, and brace for adjournment amid wage hour, bank holding, and anti monopoly debates.
The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company of Cincinnati filed suit in Boyd circuit court seeking 100,600 dollars with interest from the Cameron and Mayo Arcade Companies Inc for alleged bond defaults. The petition also asks for sale of a 99 year lease on the Cameron Arcade property in Ashland and for the sale of two properties. Nine bonds due 1933 to 1936 remain unpaid.
MADISONVILLE Ky April 30 Hopkins county members of the Stemming District Tobacco Association named a five man committee today to make a study of the association finances at Henderson nest week. Members explained they wished to determine the financial condition because they say they have not been paid in full for their 1941 crop. C A Mitchell president said the final payment would be made as money could be borrowed on 521000 pounds of tobacco in storage.

Prominent Greene County merchant M. Chummer, 60, lies near death after being shot in the neck and arm during a Friday night holdup at his Midway business. Sheriff Q T Styke leads deputies in a search for three masked youths believed to be high school age.

In Opelousas Louisiana April 40 Dave Sweatt traveling with his family in a wagon halted after his wife gave birth to a nine pound baby girl in a local garage. An official said the mother and newborn were moved to a town health facility as civic clubs supplied clothes and food. The family had been trekking 709 miles from Texas seeking work in Baton Rouge.
Bishop James Cannon Jr declares the Methodist Episcopal Church South merger plan illegal during a hearing on its constitutionality. Arguments cite 1866 action and the 434 to 226 vote at the quadrennial conference as points of debate shaping the union with northern Methodists.
Republican leaders outline final plans to present candidate names to the executive committee for the August general election. Norman Thomas national Socialist leader was forcibly removed from an automobile in Jersey City while attempting to address a May Day crowd. Police say they took him to an unknown destination as officers surrounded the car. Thomas said he had contacted J Edgar Hoover to see if the action violated the federal kidnapping law.
In a speech for the Democratic gubernatorial race, Charles J. Margiotti urged the governor to step aside and suspend two cabinet members, Secretary of the Commonwealth David L. Lawrence and Secretary of Labor Ralph H. Bashore, amid a grand jury probe into alleged bought legislation and coercion of state employees. Darrell Horton was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the highway death of Nell Hawking near Gats City Virginia. He faces a four year penitentiary sentence and remains to be tried on another charge re injuries to Gladys Pierson. The jury reached the verdict as court adjourned and Judge Carter recessed until Monday. Hortons attorney filed a motion for a new trial after the verdict was read. Horton was accompanied by a relative, Walter Horton, at the time of the incident.
In Los Angeles on April 30 a stud poker game left $2,349,000 in checks and IOUs. Barry J. Clifton, visitor from an affluent family, obtained a temporary court order halting payments on $150,000 in checks after alleging misrepresentation by Lew Brice and George Lewis. Clifton claimed Brice, a wealthy claimant, held two pairs while Brice asserted he had three sevens in a controversial dispute involving Tommy Guinan Jack Reynolds and others.
The Sullivan County primary selection board resumed a hearing on April 2 poll tax receipt fraud in Brownsville at 1 p.m. after adjourning to hear more witnesses. Chairman Brown led as four witnesses testified with limited progress, and the board urged further testimony to clarify alleged fraud tied to the contest petitions for trustee and school superintendent.
