The nation faces a catastrophic flood as rising waters spread with increasing rapidity. Officials fear further drownings and widespread damage as towns, including Gould and Yazoo City area, brace for inundation. Floods threaten additional areas across Louisiana and Mississippi with levee breaks and economic losses mounting.
Governor Peay vetoed the code commission measure that would fund a three member panel to codify Tennessee statutes with a $40 000 appropriation and salaries of 500 dollars monthly for each member plus 100 dollars for a clerk. He questioned official interest from the supreme court and deemed the work unnecessary.
MARYVILLE TENN APRIL 30 AP Hugh L Payne on trial charged with murder of Henry McMillan Knoxville merchant shot to death in February 1926 with his son in their store was found guilty of murder in the first degree with mitigating circumstances. Sentence 26 years imprisonment. Former trial for Carl McMillan ended with 20 to 25 years. Judge Blair to decide if sentences run concurrently and ten days granted for motion for new trial.
A massive explosion at the Everettsville mine of the New England Fuel and Transportation Company in Fairmont West Virginia on April 30 trapped 76 miners. Seven men were killed outright, 15 injured, and 10 escaped. Rescue teams from across northern West Virginia pushed into the smoke filled mine as authorities confirmed several deaths and numerous injuries.
A. J. Lynch, Chattanooga attorney and member of the state's counsel, urged that the master’s findings or a conspiracy claim against the Standard Oil group could determine the gasoline price fixing injunction case in federal court. He argued that Supreme Court decisions negate the need to shield the proceedings, as he requested the fate of the legislation be decided on that proof.
The Most Rev Lepold Ruiz Flores archbishop of Michoacan and aide to exiled Mexican prelates here issues a written statement denouncing President Calles of Mexico as head of a campaign against religion. He denies government charges that the Episcopals were involved in any revolt following a bandit attack near Guadalajara that killed many and wounded others.
Huntsville Alabama April 30 Mrs Barber Canterbury wife of a local merchant died here today from rabies contracted when a pet puppy bit her more than 38 months ago. Little attention was paid to the wound at the time and it apparently healed before new symptoms appeared and proved fatal despite medical aid.

Charles Birger, a noted southern Illinois gangster, faces direct charges of plotting Mayor Joe Adams’s murder in West City. A youth witness claims Birger hired him and his dead brother Elmo to kill Adams, and alleges Birger’s group dynamited and set fire to Shady Rest roadhouse, with payments of 50 dollars per hit and to a driver named Ray Hyland.
In New Orleans a massive blast window opened Caernarvon levee, allowing waters to flood Caernarvon. Engineers plan another blast to create a one thousand foot gap as river current shifts through the breaches. President Coolidge invited to visit the disaster area. Senator Tyson says it will take weeks to assess damage.

In Roanoke Virginia Walter L. Boothe a paralyzed farmer's son remains in precarious condition after nine days of life support. Friends pump air into his lungs by moving his arms and lowering and raising his chest in hopes of revival. Doctors call his condition precarious and relapse has occurred multiple times.
