U S Crime Up 6 Percent In 1871 FBI Report

FBI report shows U S crime rose 6 percent in 1871, smallest rise in years. Violent crimes up 9 percent. fifty-three major cities posted declines in serious crime while suburbs rose 11 percent and rural areas 10 percent. Northeast up 10 percent, robbery leading with 24 percent increase.

Nashville Tops In Crime Rise

The FBI reports Nashville saw the fastest rise in major crime in 1971 among Tennessee's big metros. In contrast Chattanooga cut total major crimes by 103 from 1970. Memphis and Knoxville also posted large increases, while Nashville showed gains across all seven categories. Chattanooga had mixed results with three increases and four declines.

Portsmouth Shows Sharp Crime Increase in 1971

The FBI report shows Portsmouth Virginia the sole major city with a sizable crime rise in 1971 up 43 percent amid broader small changes across other 100000 plus population cities in the state. Violent crimes including murder rape and robbery surged markedly and burglary larceny auto theft rose substantially.

Gunfight Kills British Captives in Turkish Holdout

In a room to room battle near Ankara, ten guerrillas and three civilian radar technicians were killed as troops freed the captives Gordon Banner, Charles Turner, and John Law. The hostages were part of an UNATO base labor force seized in a Black Sea town.

Sadat vows no peace as Suez clashes flare

Egyptian troops fired three rifle shots across the Suez Canal in the first such incident in three months, Israeli sources said. No fire was returned. It followed Sadat’s warning that war with Israel is inevitable and his claim the United States lies about peace efforts. He pressed a hard line at a Nile Delta air base and attacked US policy, while War Minister Sadek said war may be the only path to regain lands from 1967.

Knoxville OKs Liquor Vote Referendum Set for May 4

Knoxville approved a liquor by the drink referendum after Knox County election officials certified more than the required 4,825 signatures from voters. Knoxville becomes the last major Tennessee city to face the issue with Nashville Memphis and Chattanooga already voting. Local restaurant owners pressed the drive, while some private clubs and restaurants altered practices to reflect the pending vote.
