Farm Report: Land Judging Contest in Tennessee Apr 5

The 1971 land judging contest for 4 H and FFA members will be at the University of Tennessee Knoxville agricultural campus on April 5. The first sale from UT Bull Evaluation Station saw 37 bulls bring an average of 77 88. Sen Howard Baker will speak at the banquet after judging. The sale was March 17 at Billington Agricultural Center in Nashville. UT farm specialist Joe Ld Burns urges corn planting by May 1 for best yields due to the southwestern corn borer and corn stunt disease. Agronomist Donald D Howard notes zinc may be needed with fertilizers for some fields to boost yields.

Sullivan County 4-H Members Attend State Congress in Nashville

Five Sullivan County 4-H Club members travel to Nashville for the 24th annual Tennessee 4-H Congress. David Latture and Anita Henley sponsor trips by Kingsport Times-News. Delegates include Louise Miller Pam Reeves and Karen Smith. Latture, son of Donald and Latlure of Blountville, is a senator and Henley, daughter of Paul Henley, is a representative. David won the district History Bowl title in Knoxville and will compete against district winners in a College Bowl style quiz at the Congress.

Upper East Tennessee Counties Lead 1970 Corn Yields

Upper East Tennessee counties led the Wollstreer State in 1970 corn yields. Johnson County averaged 64 bushels per acre, Carter 62, Hancock 61, with Bledsoe 60 and Lake 59 nearby. Other upstate averages ranged from 38 to 58 bushels per acre across Claiborne, Grainger, Greene, Hawkins, Jefferson, Sullivan, Washington, and Unicoi.

Set Aside Program Expands to nation wide farm aid

The Sullivan County ASC reports set aside compliance by farmers now used nationwide for 171 set aside programs including feed grain wheat and cotton. Certification follows signup and measurement with three steps. final date for wheat May 16 and feed grain July 15. District 6 yields and county productions are listed, Greene County leading with 368,000 bushels and Unicel County smallest with 20,000.

Cost Share on Time urged by Sullivan REAP official

J S Carmack, chairman of the Sullivan ASC Committee, urges farmers to meet the REAP practice completion reporting date to ensure continued cost sharing. He notes limited funds and the need to reallocate if reporting is delayed, stressing that timely completion secures funds and allows reuse if costs are lower than approved or if a farmer cannot complete the practice.

Corn growers to get prevented planting credit rules set

William M. Cross of the ASCS announced corn prevented planting credits may be allowed where seed shortages and blight conditions exist, with limits based on farm base and seed availability checks by county ASC committees. An April 24 Virginia Tech Shenandoah Valley event will showcase animal science advances including protein supplements for steers and beef cattle, poultry litter in rations, crossbreeding, lambing on slotted floors, and chemical sheep shearing.
