Fifty-Nine POWs Freed as 1,800 U.S. Troops Leave Vietnam

In Saigon 1,800 American servicemen depart on freedom flights to return home as 49 U.S. prisoners of war are released by Hanoi and the Pathet Lao. The operation, named Countdown, marks the final phases of American withdrawal after a 12-year presence, with 2,501 still to depart.

Grain fire at George Cox property in Colonial Heights

Colonial Heights Fire Department responded at 9:50 p.m. Sunday to a grain fire on property owned by George Cox at 901 Castle Oaks Drive. Crews arrived and found the scene under control. The cause is under investigation and no injuries were reported.

Pass To Trial June 4 In Yablonski Killings Case

Albert E B Pass, 53, of Middlesboro Kentucky, will stand trial June 4 in Erie Pennsylvania on murder charges linked to the December 31, 1969 killings of UMWA reformer Joseph A Yablonski and his family. Pass has been jailed since indictment and faces federal civil rights charges. Prater was convicted of three counts of first degree murder in the same case.

Canada extends peace role in Vietnam until June

Ottawa says Canada will keep its ICCS observers in Vietnam through May 31 and may withdraw on June 30 if no definite political progress occurs. External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp called the extension an international responsibility and said Saigon and Viet Cong must move toward a political solution to end hostilities.

FAA bans almost all civilian supersonic flights over U S

Washington reports an FAA rule prohibiting nearly all civilian supersonic air travel within the United States. The exception covers only the lowest end of sonic speed where shock waves do not reach the ground. The rule takes effect April 27 and affects Concorde operations over U S airspace.
