Franco throws central army at Madrid front with pushes toward Madrid Toledo and Cordoba as negotiations for surrender fail. Republicans radio claim they would surrender their air force as a gesture of good faith. Reports said Franco’s forces might enter Madrid today.
Tennessee forecasts fair and colder tonight with increasing clouds and a likely rain in extreme southwest Tuesday afternoon. Virginia expects rain tonight turning mostly fair inland Tuesday with much colder conditions. Kentucky shows fair and colder air, with rain in the east and increasing clouds in the west Tuesday, colder by Tuesday night into Wednesday.
New York March 27 The Daily News said radio comedian Jack Benny would plead nolo contendere when he goes on trial next Monday in a Federal court on charges of smuggling 2131 worth of jewelry into the country. If the plea fails he will plead guilty and emphasize he paid 256 000 in income taxes in 218 and that it is unreasonable to suppose he would defraud the government of 3500 in customs data. The jewels are held by the government and Benny says the purchase was in good faith.
New Rockefeller Foundation report warns the Anopheles gambiae mosquito is a greater threat to Western civilization than a Martian invasion. Dr Raymond B Fosdick notes the pest could devastate crops and labor, with widespread relief claims likely as the species spreads from Central Africa to South America.
London reports Britain rejected proposals for an economic blackout against Germany or League of Nations penalties with American cooperation. Richard Butler said no boycott was being considered and Halifax could not support sanctions. Chamberlain noted Romania kept economic independence under a German trade pact and signaled future British trade missions to Bucharest.
Washington March 27 The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved President Roosevelt's nomination of William G. Douglas to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. The 41 year old, sandy haired Douglas, then chairman of the Securities Commission, would succeed Louis D. Brandeis and become Roosevelt's fourth high bench appointee. He attended the committee meeting to meet members.
Forest fires continued to burn in Pike County despite light showers. For three days residents report townsfolk battling spreading flames as firefighting efforts persist and surrounding woodlands remain in danger.
March 27, 1947 Associated Press report notes women push in state legislatures. Illinois Senate passes a bill backed by women’s groups to allow women on juries, with House action expected. An amendment would set Jan 1, 1940 as the date to enable mixed juries in courthouses. Maryland House also fights a women-on-juries measure but stalls.
Pravda today called Mussolini's Sunday speech an eloquent answer to stimulators of aggressors in London and Paris. It claimed these nations shed crocodile tears over Czecho Slovakia, now urging caution, and warned that Mussolini’s stance shows both the fragility and persistence of the Italian German alliance in Central and Southeastern Europe.

Negotiations expand beyond Brazil to Uruguay Chile Paraguay Argentina Mexico and Nicaragua with aims including central banks public works credits and trade accords. Atlanta March 27 Wage hour Administrator Elmer F Andrews spoke to Atlanta Rotarians arguing the wage hour act is broad social legislation benefiting workers and business alike. He emphasized enforcement is key and that states will share the time and pay increases, urging cooperation over jail terms to ensure lawful entitlements. Roosevelt had called for higher pay in Gainesville Ga a year earlier to help attract new industry.
Kaunas reports the Lithuanian cabinet resigns today less than a week after agreeing to cede Memel to Germany. Franco's troops enter Madrid suburbs per Burgos dispatches. Seven Little Steel companies win a temporary injunction against Walsh Healey act labor standards. Hankow reports Japanese forces capturing Nanchang in Kiangsi province.
Oklahoma City March 27 AP A powerful motor which shook to pieces was blamed by the pilot for the fiery Braniff air liner crash that killed eight. Four survived with injuries. Captain Claude Seaton of Dallas co pilot Malcolm Wallice and Perry R Smith injured, Carl Erickson least hurt. The motor was found 20 yards from wreckage. The ship took off into a north wind and radioed Turon on lights returning to field.
The Securities Commission suspended Junius A. Richards for 10 days on charges he aided two British firms in manipulating an American stock. His membership was cut on the New York Stock Exchange and six other exchanges including Baltimore Chicago and Philadelphia. The punishment was reduced due to his cooperation and because a partner exposed the matter.
Memphis, once linked to a deadly traffic toll, continues an aggressive safety drive. An enforced 80 mph speed limit, strong educational programs, and targeted driver training have helped cut fatalities this year, potentially saving seven lives to date.
In Pittsburgh on March 27 a new independence movement for Czecho-Slovakia formed among Czech and Slovak groups. Wendell Stephen Plainek, head of the National Slovak Society, was elected president of the new movement by acclamation. He aims to organize similar efforts nationwide and push for a national convention by May 15 in Washington to establish a permanent body to fight for Czecho-Slovak resurrection.

Pi Roy Lockard calmly walked to the electric chair in Bellefonte Pennsylvania, despite escaping execution fifteen times via clemency. He killed three year old Matthew Sonny Karmen, his alleged sweetheart’s child, after a dispute over dates. Lockard, a former Altogna WPA worker, was 20 and did not speak as guards administered 2,000 volts to end his life. Mrs. Margaret Karmen, twice condemned, was later sentenced to prison for 10 to 20 years.
