Washington March 26. Captain J K Taussig accuses the navy of ignoring repeated recommendations to increase personnel and of suppressing reports on unsatisfactory conditions aboard destroyers commissioned in the war. The UNFAVORABLE REPORTS SUPPRESSED phrase is echoed in his charges.
Washington reports show the naval court of inquiry widening to cover all aspects of handling American vessels in French waters. Admiral Sims contests scope while Secretary Daniels stands by original instructions. Fletcher testifies that orders were vague and not specific on convoy rules.
The 1920 Catholic directory released in New York on March 25 reports US church membership rising by 186,224 to 27,650,204. The number of archbishops grew from 14 to 16, bishops decreased due to deaths, and 1,079 seminarians were added. New parishes reached 148 and two new orphan asylums were established.
Lincoln Neb March 24 Time for entering candidates in the States Presidential preference primary April 20 expired Saturday One of the outstanding features of the campaign according to the present alignment will be a fight between the supporters of W J Bryan and Senator Hitchcock for control of Nebraska s delegation of sixteen to the Democratic national convention Senator Hitchcock s friends have entered him in the race along with a ticket of candidates seeking places on the states national convention delegation The Bryan men likewise have a list of delegate candidates including Mr Bryan who has announced that if elected he will not support Senator Hitchcock assigning the latter s vote against submission of the federal prohibition amendment as one reason for opposing him In the Republican presidential preferential race Gen John J Pershing Maj Gen Leonard Wood and Senator Hiram Johnson of California have been entered as candidates while Robert Ross of Lexington Neb will occupy the position of being a candidate on both the Republican and Democratic tickets A voters petition to place the name of Gov Edward S Edwards of New Jersey on the Democratic ballot as a candidate for the presidential nomination was filed today Governor Edwards name will go on the ballot it was said at the secretary of state s office despite a statement by him that he could not accept.
Washington March 24 The Anti Saloon League declares war on Senator Hitchcock of Nebraska Wayne B Wheeler says Hitchcock in favor of an amendment permitting light wines and beers would lose him support in the Democratic convention and Senate leadership Hitchcock responds stating his aim is enforce Prohibition while permitting lawful light wines and beers within constitutional bounds He cites the Supreme Court ruling on intoxicating liquor and asserts the Volstead act can be changed within constitutional limits
Alf Taylor and eight performers present a program of music speeches and impersonations at the High school to celebrate Bob Taylor Lodge of Knights of Pythias first anniversary. Mrs. Robert L. Taylor is invited. Admission is free. Show starts at 8 o'clock.
Lincoln Neb March 25 The proposed constitutional amendment to grant Nebraska women full voting privileges could be made effective by the governor in time for the November general election if adopted by voters at the September 21 election.
Gov. Allen of Kansas condemns wartime and postwar government spending in Lansing as a carnival of extravagance with no honest return. He cites 150,000,000 for port terminals, 20,000,000 for a river terminal, 120,000,000 on nitrate plants, and 100,000,000 on tanks that produced little wartime result. He decries mismanagement and urges Republicans to restore American enterprise.
Washington reports the United States has presented its stance on Turkey to the Allies. It calls for removing Turks from Europe, creating an international Dardanelles commission with a Russian outlet, and liberal Armenian territorial rights with a sea outlet. It opposes Cilicia joining Armenia and warns against any single power gaining paramount influence in Turkey’s future. It does not oppose a British protectorate over Palestine and Mesopotamia but cautions against Italian Mediterranean ambitions in Asiatic Turkey.
Ottawa reports most Canadian cities will adopt daylight saving in May despite no dominion law. Dominion authorities say railways will run on standard time.

Christopherson renominated. Cooke and Sioux Falls reporter reappointed.
Columbia March 25 Secretary Meredith urged South Carolina farmers to repopulate farms and value agricultural service, calling himself a sales manager for the department. He likened agriculture to a 4,000 worker factory and pressed for better pay for experts, while noting ongoing seed work and cotton trials needing funding.
London on March 26 United Press reports Elihu Root has accepted an invitation from the League of Nations to serve on its committee for organizing an international court of justice. The announcement states he will aid in drafting plans and shaping the court's framework.
Berlin reports that efforts to restore order across Germany continue to succeed. Rhine provinces grow quieter as government cites agreement with most insurrectionary workers groups. Estimated dead from March 13 onward range from two to three thousand.
Berlin dispatch reports that the Bauer cabinet formed only yesterday resigned today. Majority socialists urged President Ebert to order Herman Mueller, the former foreign minister, to form a new government amid the political shakeup.
President Wilson will notify Congress in response to the Kahn resolution that American troops on the Rhine will not take part in any advance into Germany to quell internal strife.
Washington reports Republican house leaders completed a tentative peace resolution to end the state of war with Germany. Representative Porter of Pennsylvania said he would introduce a resolution declaring that the war ceased on April 6, 1917. Republican Leader Mondell added that an over riding veto could make it effective if the president refused to sign.
Kingsport residents, several hundred, will ride a special train Tuesday April 6 to hear Billy Sunday preach at the tabernacle. The 5 PM departure returns the same night with a round trip fare of 1.68 dollars tax included. Dr J H Clifford Y M C A secretary expects at least 500 travelers.
Ed Houston of Bluff City a former soldier seeks the Democratic nomination for Sullivan County Trustee in the April 10 primary. He declares he will not withdraw, denounces rumors of withdrawal, and says only death will remove him before the polls on April 10.
Good weather enables ground breaking for a new three story brick building on Broad Street and two wings of the Kingsport Inn by J. L. Shoun and N. H. Goodwin. The inn additions will add 44 rooms and improved facilities. Other city projects advance, including YMCA first story, Grant Leather foundation work, Corning Glass carpentry, Joe Strauss building closure, and Kingsport Improvement Company plans for 40 new dwellings.
Washington March 26 United Press says a Senate resolution may seek a congressional inquiry into the funds of presidential candidates from both parties. Senator Kenyon of Iowa expected to introduce the measure.
The Kingsport Concert Band formed last week at City Hall voted to campaign for 1000 to buy instruments. Secretary Guy E Devault said the group would approach local businessmen in a few days. By-laws were adopted pledging members to donate services to city schools and to give free open air concerts. The band has sixteen experienced members and will begin rehearsals once instruments are purchased.
No through train service is announced for March 28 on the C C and O. Railroad officials say no instructions or timetable details have been received, and no further information about a Charleston to Cincinnati through service is available this week.
J W Wyatt owner of a third floor skating rink in the Roller building on Broad street and William Roller proprietor face a city order to cease use of the building for skating. The ordinance allows fines from 10 to 50 dollars daily for noncompliance. Roller would remove the rink but Wyatt’s two year lease keeps him in place and may lead to court action.
Gov James M Cox speaking to the Iroquois Club denounced a senatorial conspiracy for the defeat of the peace treaty and urged repeal of the excess profits tax and inheritance taxes. He proposed a small tax on business volume to fund government without raising prices, and warned against Bolshevik hysteria. He blamed the Senate for world affairs and urged reform of wartime fiscal policy.
Centenary revival at Broad Street Methodist church reports twelve professions of faith and forty new members across two Kingsport churches. Services led by Pastors Hendricks and Woodyard run nightly at 7:30, daily except Saturdays, through Easter Sunday with all welcome.
