A deadly fire in Gary Indiana left one man dead another missing and a third gravely injured. The blaze swept an 18 apartment building and sent 100 residents streaming onto the street during the storm.
An investigation into charges of prohibition law violations at the federal Jerosarium at Carville La was ordered today by Prohibition Administrator M D Jackson on orders from Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W Mellon.
Washington March 25 The House Ways and Means Committee approved a bill under the Young Plan settlement providing the United States with 275 million dollars from Germany to cover the cost of the American army of occupation.
The captain and eight crewmen were saved when the tug Mary Clare was rammed and sunk by the steamer Calvert in heavy fog blanketing Baltimore harbor. The collision halted shipping in Chesapeake Bay and near the harbor.
Governor Henry H Horton learned a cablegram reporting his nephew John Wilhoite Hillips 30 died from a fractured skull at Tela Honduras where he worked for United Fruit Company. The message gave no cause of injury. Phillips was son of Mrs Mary B Phillips Nashville sister of Mrs Horton.
Thomas N Nail a 40 year old rural mail carrier was injured with a fractured leg after his car was hit by a fast passenger train at a private Illinois crossing near Hernando Mississippi. The car was carried more than 200 feet before being wrecked. Nail survived with a broken leg and bruises.
Washington reports Lieutenant Colonel Robert C. Richardson Jr., commandant of cadets at West Point and assistant to Major General William R. Smith, superintendent, is to be relieved from his post.
H L Grigsby state superintendent of banking was named receiver for the Bank of Telford in Telford Tennessee. Shortages totaling 44591 42 were found in the accounts of Fred H Wagner vice president and cashier. Appointment was made by Chancellor S E Miller of Johnson City as bank examiner H B Clark noted the audit was not yet complete.
Memphis reports Napoleon Coleman, 69, died from injuries after being knocked down and trampled by a cow he was guiding to a slaughter pen. He suffered a fractured spine in the incident yesterday, authorities said.
Washington March 25 AP income tax receipts for the first 22 days of March show a total of 517,803,027 dollars, below the 547,189,703 dollars collected by the same date in March 1929. The treasury department issued the statement today citing continued declines in monthly income tax collections.

The ocean liner Europa, 51 000 tons, on her maiden voyage from Cherbourg to New York, smashed the Bremen’s record with a 4 day 17 hour 6 minute crossing. Severe head winds and heavy seas marked the voyage as Ambrose Lightship was passed at 5 54 a m to complete the record.
Dr Hugo Eckener announced the International Zeppelin Transport Company has been formed with backing from large industrial and banking groups. Major partners include National City Bank United Aircraft and Transport Corp Union Carbide Aluminum Company of America and Goodyear Zeppelin Corp. Eckener envisions larger airships for US and German service with European and American terminals planned near Seville and Baltimore.
Paris March 25 AP Foreign Minister Briand told the senate the way remains open for a naval reduction agreement though France has not yet achieved its aims. He warned against false equality theories and reiterated France’s readiness to return to the conference and pursue a general security pact to halt war.
In Stuttgart Germany a seventh person has died from eating bear ham sold by a local butcher last week without government inspection. The outbreak includes sixty trichinosis cases, prompting health officials to warn residents and trace the source of the meat.
The murder of Clothilde Marchand is set for trial with Lia Jimerson charged with first degree murder for allegedly influencing Seneca woman Nancy Bowen to kill Marchand. Jurors and state witnesses include Bowen and possibly Marchand himself. Gov aid debated as federal intervention in Six Nations matters is discussed.

Hamburg American and North German Lloyd announce pooling of interests in a Hamburg Bremen communique. The fusion in fact ends decades of rivalry and creates a joint fleet of 330 steamers totaling over 2,000,000 gross register tons.
In Nashville on March 25 AP report says Commissioner James M Sout hall of the state department of labor was reelected president of the State Association of Arson Squads. Nashville will host the 1931 convention after bids from Memphis and Johnson City. District vice-presidents named include J M Reams Kingsport chief for the first district W J Tomerlin Springfield chief for the second Theodore C Stehr Humboldt chief for the third and M O Allen Newport chief for the fourth.
Four months of searching ended with the identification of Dr. Ernest Watzl and a woman believed to be Mary McGranahan in a Vienna hotel room. Both died of gunshot wounds. Watzl’s father, Herman Watzl, identified the man’s body. The couple’s finances and a $50,000 estrangement suit were cited as factors in the deaths.
Senate leaders backed separate votes on tariff amendments for sugar lumber and cement with a plan to send the measure to conference. Democrats and independents accuse a vote trading pact while Garner pushes for coalition moves to let the house express views via separate ballots.
