Sullivan Canbr y Agent J. W. Mebain says heavy March rains improved agricultural prospects in the county though delays hinder spring work. Frosty, wet conditions left tobacco beds, spring oats, alfalfa, clover, and grasses behind schedule while moisture aids ground. Fruit trees suffered minor blast from frost and wind.
Washington reports a bill to repeal a 1954 tax benefits act, retroactive to void million dollar provisions and affect thousands of 1954 tax returns. Backed by Eisenhower administration and some Republicans, opposed by Democrats who warn of loopholes and windfalls.
In McAlester Oklahoma March 24 an attorney for Dr Ren Salbraill charged with murder of wife and three children said a letter found at the scene will be the basis for a committal to a mental hospital An application to send him to Eastern State Hospital Vinita will be filed in district court Salbraill pleaded innocent at arraignment and waived preliminary hearing The letter spoke of despair frustration and a wish to end his life amid a grim search that linked the physician to the deaths Officers found the letter during the Galbraith home investigation and he was arrested after returning from Tennessee He attempted suicide en route to Memphis with the sheriff and a deputy M C Cowan described him as mild mannered and quoted Shakespeare after an overnight trip to McAlester
Nashville reports say Frank Clement expects a set of conferences with union and management next week to resolve the Louisville and Nashville Railroad strike. If talks in Washington fail, negotiations will continue in Nashville with National Mediation Board officials and labor representatives. Clement returned after a brief Washington trip where meetings with Francis ONeal Jr and others occurred.
Two armed masked men held up Hiltons Market in downtown Elizabethton around 1 30 am taking 412.24 in cash. M Nave, operator, said the men ordered the register opened and fled. Deputies noted three witnesses saw the bandits flee toward an alley as shots were fired. Investigators continued work early today.
A mysterious figure identified as XYZ sent Richmond IRS headquarters a plain envelope with six one hundred dollar bills and a note stating the payment of XYZ’s personal income tax. The anonymous payer has sent cash annually to Richmond for several years, and authorities say they have no idea of the intent or identity behind the payments.
Sullivan County officials scheduled a hearing April 4 at 9 am in the court house here on a petition against Southern Distributing Co. of Kingsport. Filed by the Sullivan County Dry Forces, the case claims the firm harms welfare and is a public nuisance, citing proximity to three churches and seeking revocation of permits. The petition, supported by about 50 to 75 county workers and around 200 residents, follows guidance from Criminal Court Judge Thomas H. Rogan.
The Cumberland River reached forty feet flooding Clarksville and surrounding areas, with six deaths and one missing. Police recovered bodies of Max Maree and Noah Smith, both from Murray Kentucky, as search efforts continued for Mrs Nance. Washington March 24 A coal industry spokesman urged a congressional investigation into the delays in a civil antitrust suit against five major American oil companies. Joseph E Moody president of the Southern Coal Producers Assn said the firms form part of an international cartel and are involved in dumping Venezuelan residual oil at east coast ports to gain coal fuel markets. Moody testified for a Senate labor subcommittee studying unemployment and argued residual oil imports worsen coal mining layoffs. He contended oil firms can dump residual oil at a loss and offset it by higher gasoline and miner oil prices. He said world producers favor gasoline and lighter oils, squeezing residual oil sales, while Venezuelan firms allegedly pursue the reverse. Moody noted unemployment in Pennsylvania West Virginia and Kentucky tied to government surplus food handouts and cited coal areas with high dependence.

Harmon's cross examination marked another setback for the prosecution as ex call girl Pat Ward claimed Jelke recruited Harmon for prostitution guidance.
