Fourteen defendants from across Tennessee face ten indictments for conspiring to evade gasoline taxes in a broad state scheme. One woman among those indicted, bond set at 5000 dollars for local defendants and 10000 for out-of-state defendants. The case links to a gasoline unit probe and involves shipments labeled kerosene to dodge the tax.
Under questioning by the senate lobby committee in Washington, Smith of Portland Ore admitted entertaining congressmen. He said expenses were shared and a railroad bill was not discussed.

Indianapolis March 24 George W Barrett a former Kentucky feudist known for killings was hanged by the Federal government two minutes after midnight for the murder of Federal agent Nelson B. C. Feder at West College Corner Indiana. The execution occurred in a tented gallows at Marion county jail under Phil Hanna the Humane Hansman with Arthur Heeves the deputy sheriff as executioner. Barrett claimed he mistook Kein for a friend when arrested. This was the first federal execution since pioneer days and may be the last.
The British super liner Queen Mary sailed from Greenock on the Clyde to a crowd estimated at a million. After a fifteen mile journey down the river amid three bends she reached the pier where cheers rose as sixty special trains brought spectators aboard.
Three former Tampa police officers faced kidnapping charges as Florida moves toward trial over the fatal flogging of a suspected Communist last November. A Hillsborough jury was sought from 108 talesmen for the panel, with trials expected to proceed after deputy chiefs and other principals named in the case.

Paris says Pierre Etienne Flandin would refuse to return to London if German counter proposals were considered, placing British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden in a tight spot amid EU crisis talks.
Chancellor R B C Howell ruled the new Tennessee franchise tax valid for corporations but unconstitutional for partnerships declared the tax was a privilege tax not a property tax and that partnerships lack a state granted franchise. Both sides appealed to the Supreme Court from the ruling with the state and manufacturers association expecting further action.
E M Cross of Kingsport withdraws from the Democratic sheriff race as Hubert Taylor of Bristol drops out of the county school superintendent bid. Georgia Governor Eugene Talmadge announced a radio speech to be aired on WSB at 7 15 p m next Friday in which he will attack Atlanta banks he accuses of acting as sheriff jury and judge of state money He aims to expose what he calls efforts to block his executive fisc al program and to defend his control of state funds amid bank disapproval and a prior ouster of state treasurer George B Hamilton.
A hotel guest died when a brick chimney film collapse struck during a wind and rainstorm. Five others were injured including Rose Larkin and her daughter Rosella, while J Chase and Ralph Barton suffered minor injuries. The incident toppled a 40 foot brick furnace chimney on the South side, damaging third floor rooms at the Ambassador on South Main Street.
Port Gibson Miss March 24 Five persons including two women were held today in connection with the mystery slaying of Joseph H Lord 50 planter near Hermanville. Names given include Mrs Gordon Emmerich Mrs Evelyn Cliburn Gaither Ainsworth a man named King and a negro identified as Jack EF. Lord’s crushed skull was found in a shallow grave behind his home with bloodstains in the house. He likely died about two weeks earlier after an influenza illness. The case arose after a searching party organized by his brother John Lord led to discovery. The sheriff said Lord vanished February 27 and Early who had lived at the Lord home stayed until last Thursday. Early reportedly told investigators Lord had gone to Baton Rouge Nalchex Rodney or other cities. We later learn Early wired from Knoxville Tenn claiming to return but left Knoxville hotel the next morning. Sheriff Jones said Lord had been nursed by Mrs Emmerich late February. The purse report morning February 28 noted Lord missing and Mrs Emmerich claimed concern. The case remains under investigation.
Atlanta police push to catch a spree killer after a 26 year old James Redding was shot as he fled his car. Earlier victims include 3 year old Leddus Arnold and another unidentified person. Authorities label the assailant a known figure tied to a preacher. an uncle of a suspect is questioned. a sister’s child is mentioned but not linked to the attack.
