Convicted in the first degree after five hours of jury deliberation he faces the death sentence Monday New York statutes provide the only penalty first degree murder. The jury found Cowan shot Miss Burton because she planned to end their friendship to marry former Utah state Senator Arthur B Lewis. Cowan claimed Miss Burton killed herself in a death pact with him. He had estranged from his wife and fired a bullet into his head shortly after her death. Lewis testified he instructed his lawyers to begin divorce proceedings to free him to marry her.

Roanoke March 24 A nine year old boy Clarence Edward Pollard son of Mr and Mrs James Pollard drowned after accidentally falling from a boat in the Roanoke River near his home. Police and volunteers searched through the night but the body was not recovered before daylight. The companion, a nine year old boy, witnessed Pollard lose his balance and slip into the water.
