Deliverance inspired canoe tragedy claimed four students
Four Ohio State University students died when two canoes capsized on the Scioto River about 10 miles south of Marion. The victims Michael B. Smith Marc J. Silverman Howard R. Banchek and Charles Roessler were 20 to 21 years old. The trip aimed for Columbus but was halted after the boats overturned near an old dam.
