NATO forces commander in southern Europe warned that conventional attacks might require nuclear weapons to hold territory amid growing tension with the Soviet bloc. Admiral Horacio Rivera spoke Monday night on the strategic balance between NATO and Soviet forces.
In a long delayed meeting at the White House 12 Black House members will present concerns of about 25 million African Americans to President Nixon. The House Black Caucus announced the Thursday session after months of delays and a boycott of the State of the Union highlighted tensions over White House outreach to blacks.
In San Francisco a young woman and an unnamed companion caused a toe padlock mishap while fooling with a padlock. Neighbors provided soap while firemen and a locksmith tried tools. After three hours the lock was finally opened with a custom key to relieve the toe.
Washington authorities urge hospital cooperation in replacing Abbott Laboratories intravenous solutions linked to a septicemia outbreak. FDA ordered recall as Charles C. Edwards says manufacturers can supply for two months and that 4000 hospitals used the product. 350 cases reported, nine deaths, with many details uncertain.
Vienna round of SALT enters its second week with the United States awaiting signs of Soviet willingness to negotiate on offensive weapons. Meeting held at the Soviet embassy. U.S. proposals on ABM and offensive delivery have not elicited a reply. Soviet negotiators show fatigue, forecasting only token progress this year and rejecting ABM-only deals.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson accuses the Nixon administration of courting disaster by proposing Soviet participation in a Middle East peacekeeping force.
