Washington official details on a Senate subcommittee probe into a San Francisco bank failure. Former bank president HC Silverthorne accuses two witnesses of perjury as hearings continue. The panel may refer the record to the Justice Department after Silverthorne finishes testimony.
Judge Kenneth Turner calls the local anti poverty program “un workable” as 43 youths aged 16 to 21, paid 25 cents daily, cannot perform tasks. He warns the program must be cut back drastically. Court clerk Thomas Boyle notes 14 of 24 workers, many Negro, would be eliminated. clerks cannot supervise them continually. The program, part of a 1.1 million yearly effort, aims to train youths but is hampered by low pay and supervision needs.
Pittsburgh UPI reports United Steelworkers leaders and executives from major steel firms opened bargaining on pay and future security. The talks focus on a three year contract expiring April 30 and include gains toward total job security. Negotiations also address aluminum contracts due to reopen, with USW coordinating with big steel and aluminum industry leaders.
Mississippis Gov Paul Johnson told chamber of commerce officials from 16 Southern states that economic solutions are the answer to racial problems. The remark came during the 7th annual conference of the Southern Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives in Biloxi Mississippi.

In Memphis a 23 year old mother, Ruhit Mae Price, is slated for a hearing on a involuntary serious case charge after her eight month old son Melvin Green died in a house fire. Firemen found the heavily damaged one story home’s body of Melvin as investigators said she left five children unsupervised two hours before the blaze.
