Scott County officers intensified their search for a hit and run driver after two girls walking to church along the Gate City to Appalachia highway were struck. Nellie Hawkins, 16, suffered a severe abdominal laceration and a broken leg and was hospitalized in Kingsport in critical condition. Fay Pierson, 23, also fractured a leg but was listed in good condition. The accident occurred about 7 30 p m as the pair neared a church route to Appalachia and involved an old sedan. Witnesses offered little description, and the case continued to be investigated.
Michael Fugmann, condemned by a dying man, lost in the state supreme court today his bid to escape the electric chair for Pennsylvania 1934 Easter gift bombings. Three people died in Luzerne County homes from packages resembling Easter eggs. Fugmann, a 54 year old former German artilleryman, argued the conviction was based on circumstantial evidence and challenged tracing materials used in the bombs.
Tila Mae Feed, 14, of Lynn Garden, won 1009 damages from a local taxi company after being struck Oct 22 while returning home. The cab driven by Bill Catyhell and owned by T. J. Seals, both defendants, allegedly caused facial and body scars. she was unconscious for three days and hospitalized eight. The trial was before Judge Shelburne Ferguson as part of a crowded docket.
Washington March 21 The House approved the administration s billion dollar naval expansion bill after defeating a recommittal motion aimed at stripping three battleships from the plan The measure authorizes 46 new warships 22 auxiliary vessels and 950 aircraft costing about 731 million for ships 246 million for auxiliaries and 106 million for planes Officials estimate a total 3 000 planes and 30 million for experimental devices plus 7 000 000 for an airship to test dirigibles The bill moves to the Senate Browning in Nashville reports a cold not severe enough to hinder his appointments
Japanese shock troops failed to crack Chinese defenses along the Grand canal as artillery pounded trenches 18 miles north of Suchow. An advance guard of Japanese cavalry was driven back by Chinese fire. Fighting raged since the push began over a week, with heavy losses on both sides as Japanese aimed at crossing the canal and advancing toward Taierchwang and Taoyang. Three American women missionaries were noted in a continuation.

If the jury verdict is upheld he will be moved to death row now held by two men slated for execution April 1.
Washington March 21 President Roosevelt gave Arthur E. Morgan chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority the choice of withdrawing charges against TVA colleagues or resigning. Friends said Morgan would refuse to testify and would not back charges against others, as a White House inquiry into the TVA directors loomed. Bridges warned any resignation could trigger calls for others to quit as congress readied a full investigation amid debate over funding for a Gilbertsville dam.
