State Union Recognition Doubt Rises In Nashville

Labor unions and city and county officials reached an agreement on legislation to recognize unions locally, but state recognition remains unresolved. A union representative and a Municipal League official announced the agreement before the House Labor Committee in Nashville. The proposal will be introduced after the budget recess. Governor Dunn has refused to recognize a prison guards union, and the administration has not issued a firm policy on unions.

No-Fault Likely To Get Nixon Backing On Auto Insurance

Washington sources say the Nixon administration will back a gradual adoption of no fault auto insurance after a two year, $2 million study. Transportation Secretary Volpe will urge Senate Commerce Committee to adopt a phased plan while critics cite reduced court delays and high legal costs. A Senate bill by Hart and Magnuson would set federal standards, but Volpe’s recommendations are expected to be softer.

Society's Child Dies A Hobo In New Jersey

Winthrop L. Biddle, 74, once from a distinguished Philadelphia family, died after being struck by a car in Camden New Jersey while pushing a cart of belongings. He rode a bicycle in a red vest and striped shirt and wore three pairs of trousers and socks. He sought to publish a book The Biddles of Philadelphia detailing his life and inheritance loss, but never finished it. A friend said the manuscript was hidden somewhere on the East Coast.
