In Blountville a Kingsport girl case ends with closing speeches as the all male jury hears Emerson C Smith Jr plead not guilty to felonious assault involving a minor. Prosecution and defense spar over prior records and alleged predatory acts while witnesses describe alleged advances to young girls.
UN truce chief Maj. Gen. E L M Burns prepared to blame Israel for the February clash at the Gaza frontier that killed 38 Egyptians and eight Israelis. He will urge the UN to strengthen its watch and report to the Security Council. Egypt and Israel traded accusations over who started the incident as border tensions rose.
The Kentucky Court of Appeals will hear arguments in Frankfort over the Louisville and Nashville Railroad strike now in its fourth day. The walkout by 50,000 union members across 14 states has disrupted freight and passenger service, with the railroad seeking to restore orders allowing crossing picket lines. Damages claims total $645,000 against unions and $215,009 per day against AFL operators, while four union leaders face court appearance for potential contempt of injunction.
In Blountville on March 17 a felonious assault charge against Jake Sells related to the shooting of 28 year old Ruth Hommel was placed on the retired docket after a conference among Attorney General H. Conway Smith J. M. Broyles and the victim. The case may be retried per judge Thomas H. Hogan order. Sells and Hommel said prepared for trial though Hommel said she was not acting as prosecutor. A 28 caliber bullet struck Hommel above the breast during an incident at her Frank Cloud apartment earlier in January. Both sides claim the shooting was an accident after a gathering with Hommel sisters and companions returning from drinking.
New York prosecutors present Pat Ward as key witness in Jelke case, detailing a list of alleged clients from two address books. Ward testified Jelke helped recruit her for the vice trade in 1961 and 1952, using Pat’s apartment and hotel rooms as venues. Witness named several men linked to the alleged scandal, while denying all financial ties.
Curtain rises for a three day run of the 1955 Around the Town talent show at the Civic Auditorium tonight after three weeks of rehearsal. Larry Knowles unveils the two act musical featuring a Washington trip and a Spanish Mayored Minstrel from Mexico with many parodies on radio television and politics. The production includes a cast of seniors and senoritas plus dancers and an interlocutor. Curtain time is 8 o'clock each night through Saturday.

A five year old girl Wanda Faye Harrison died from burns suffered when her clothes caught fire in Clinchport Virginia. She died at Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport at 9 10 p m Wednesday December 4 1954. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Willie Roy Harrison of Eline the body is at Sentis County Funeral Home.

Governor Clement signed a local measure creating a General Sessions Court in Hawkins County to take over cases from justices of the peace. Senate passage moved Hawkins County bills toward dual tax assessments, a purchasing agent, director of accounts, and a county budget committee.
