Growers may sign up for the 1964 feed grain program to receive part of a diversion payment and price support. Up to half the diversion payment can be advanced at the participant’s request. Participating crops include corn, grain sorghum and barley with a minimum 2 percent diversion. Signup continues at the ASCE through March 27.
Sullivan County 4 H club members competed in the District Public Speaking Contest in Knoxville after winning the county contest in Blountville. Winners listed include Teddy Tate Beverly Carrier Kathleen Lane and David Overbay with many alternates across senior junior girls and boys divisions. Judgment was provided by Extension agents and 4 H adult leaders from Carter County.
Eighteen county farmers completed the final of three day-long sessions on farm management in Tazewell Va. County agents from Tazewell and surrounding counties taught in a team approach to address farmers problems.
Tennessee turkey producers plan to raise 185000 birds in 1964, a 65 percent increase over 1963 and 17 percent above the 1950s average, according to the Tennessee Crop Reporting Service.
Johnson City report notes US Department of Agriculture shifting tobacco research focus after the surgeon general's health findings. Dr Thomas Theis says studies will target health hazard components in tobacco products, urging chemical and physiological investigations.
In Tennessee the last chance to plant forest seedlings is before March. Seedlings, available via the Forestry Division, can be purchased from the Prison Nursery with species like loblolly pine and yellow poplar still in stock though poplar and cottonwood are low. Prices range from 4 to 10 dollars per thousand. A landowner may plant themselves or hire planters. over 100 certified planters are available statewide.
A group of four Tennessee farm leaders from county farm bureaus toured the nation’s capital on the annual Farm Bureau Washington tour. They traveled by chartered bus from Nashville to Washington and back, spending days at the American Farm Bureau, Congress, Department of Agriculture, Smithsonian, and FBI headquarters. Participants included R B Danew of Elizabethton Joe Hawkins of Shouns Robert J Love of Erwin and B C Hunt of Jonesboro.
The Agriculture Department announced its first beef purchases under a government buying program to support live cattle prices and counter import limits. It bought 588,1000 pounds of choice frozen ground beef and boneless roasts and canned beef in natural juices for about 326,000 dollars. Prices ranged 5.18 to 6.48 cents per pound for 28 carloads. Bids from eight of 23 bidders totaling 4,505,000 pounds were accepted. Canned beef purchases totaled 1,968,810 pounds costing 1,019,000 dollars with prices 0.50 to 2.82 dollars per pound for 31 carloads. Eighteen bidders offered 7,367,100 pounds. three bids were accepted. The choice grade beef will go to schools and other institutions, while canned beef will go mainly to needy families.
Twenty five years ago last week Governor Prentice Cooper signed the Tennessee Soil Conservation District Act to curb erosion and improve water and living standards. Sullivan County District chartered December 1953, with local boards and fulltime staff aiding farm plans, gully control, terracing and reforestation across about 1,000,000 acres and 35,000 farms. The program spurred better roads, homes, and rural development through local leadership and coordinated state agencies.
Landowners in the highland area of Sumner County formed Tennessee’s first Soil Conservation District. James I. Bailey, Supervisor of Education Services for the Tennessee Department of Conservation, helped organize it. The district faced little opposition, was voted in, chartered, and began operations in late 1940.
Sullivan 4-H Chatter notes National 4H Club Week shifts from March to Sept 4H clubs nationwide will observe Sept months and plan a window display. Central Heights clubs vote for arm bands and eggs for an orphanage. Ann Fleenor earns a trip to Chicago for the National Youthpower Congress in April with Tennessee representation. County Demonstration Night set for April 13. Barbara Grose receives credit for the Avocado bread contest. Dr Harry Emerson Fosdick is quoted on vision guiding future deeds.
Tennessee Farm Bureau women convene four district meetings this week led by state chairman Mrs. D. W. Bond. Upper East Tennessee session in Morristown today with 9 40 registration and 2 45 adjournment. Sullivan County delegates include Mrs. Doris Thomas and Farm Bureau President Philip Berhart. over 40 attendees expected. Other districts: McMinnville Tuesday Nashville Wednesday Jackson Thursday. Clyde M. York and staff will present the 1964 theme The Time Is Now and initiate program ideas for counties and presidents.
