A coroner's jury probes a dawn shootout on a creek bridge near Wilmington in which Leopold Roberts a 29 year old mail truck driver and W P Starling a 35 year old New Hanover deputy sheriff were killed. Five deputy sheriffs had halted a rumored liquor run and exchanged fire after Roberts opened fire as the vehicle stopped. There was no whisky recovered.

K M Barry former president of the closed First State Bank of Erwin is under indictment on forgery charges two indictments by the November grand jury. He is expected to be returned to Erwin from Houston Texas with bonds to be fixed upon his return. Sheriff W M Buckner traveled to Texas to secure him.
In Tokyo a Soviet commercial envoy named Paul Anikeiff was seriously wounded by an unidentified assassin. Police and embassy officials reported the attack and opened an investigation into suspects and motives.
Leopold Roberts, a mail truck driver, and W P Starling deputy sheriff, both longtime residents of Goldsboro and distant cousins, shot each other to death near Wilmington yesterday. The two men had been boyhood playmates and attended school together in Goldsboro.
A sheriff attempting to arrest two brothers for a $1400 Battleground State Bank robbery was killed along with one brother at their mother's home north of Monticello Indiana. Deputy Barney Ireland was wounded as he fled. The brothers’ bodies were found with one laid across the other after the exchange.
In Washington on March 16 a conference at the American Federation of Labor began to draft an agreement for the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen to join the AFL. Leaders include William Green Frank Morrison and J M Bugeniazer with trainmen officials Albert Whitney and James Farquarson. Other union presidents were summoned as jurisdictional issues loom. Preparations for the amalgamation have been under consideration for more than a year.
Washington reports four million citizens filed income tax returns by midnight today with the March 15 deadline moved to today. Officials estimate 525 million dollars will flow in with payments, though receipts for 1930 may be about 100 million less due to weak demand.

Warden Henry C Hill said the state penitentiary chaplain resigned February 25 after evidence showed he fostered prisoner dissatisfaction and carried letters to and from inmates He spoke after announcing a second convict died from wounds in Saturday riot where four convicts were shot two fatally and a guards captain broke an arm
Joliet Illinois March 16 officials began restoring routine at the Illinois state penitentiary after a Saturday uprising left one convict dead and three wounded. Warden Henry C Hill and aides supervise cautious reorganization as guards patrol the walls and 1100 prisoners remain in cells on short rations. 43 ringleaders will stay in solitary confinement indefinitely. Legislators appointed to probe the death of Joseph Coakley visited the damaged areas and prepared for a Springfield meeting to plan a thorough investigation.
W Kingsland Macy Republican state chairman urged unified civic support for an investigation of city government. He called for coordinated movements to press legislative intervention and named Samuel Seabury to hear charges against District Attorney Thomas C. T. Crain as special counsel.
President Hoover selected Theodore Joslin of the Boston Transcript to be his secretary succeeding George Akerson who resigned to join a large moving picture company. Joslin, 41, is a veteran Washington correspondent and has long contributed to World's Work and other political magazines.
The Association of Cotton Textile Merchants of New York says prices should improve as shipments exceed production and unfilled orders rise. It notes stocks are at three year lows due to demand aligned production, with January and February sales strong but not pushing prices to satisfactory levels because many orders have extended delivery times.
Nashville March 16. Legislators reconvening the 67th general assembly faced a push to block a second adjournment. The state affairs investigation panel sponsors a results summary of the probe into state affairs will follow on page 6.
A move to force a second adjournment recess until May 25 was circulating in hotel lobbies for legislator signatures. The investigating committee seeks more time for its inquiry into state government as Crump and Shelby County supporters lead the push. The House appeared set to pass but a Senate vote fight raged.

Investigators link Col Luke Lea and Rogers Caldwell to the banks and potential state deposit influence.
