A Riouneville murder case goes to final arguments as defense and state press case details. Witnesses described Horton firing after Hobbs allegedly struck him, with defense claiming self defense and Hobbs threatening Horton before the shooting. The trial included testimony on a blackjack incident and Horton's fear, while relatives and associates watched closely.
A Louisville & Nashville strike cripples service as 25 000 nonoperating employees walk out. Fifteen passenger schedules canceled and freight runs delayed as unions from telegraphers to carmen convene in Kentucky, Tennessee, and southern states. A central Louisville office coordinates efforts while the railroads seek court relief to bar picketing and preserve through service between Cincinnati and New Orleans. The unions, led by C C Griffith, vow unlimited duration as talks shift to railroad leaders.
Widespread strike actions in Alabama and Georgia disrupted telephone service. In Atlanta a 1,210 pair cable was cut near a driveway entrance and several lines were damaged provoking short lived police communication outages. Six Bessemer area communities lost service from 16 cut lines as union disputes persisted. Negotiations between unions and management resumed later in May amid accusations of sabotage and a $5,000 reward was offered. Union leaders denied responsibility, insisting wages were the core issue.

Mead Corporation employees will share in the largest profit sharing payout in company history. The record amount of 31,826,940.52 reflects Mead’s 1854 operation and was signed by President Howard E. Whitaker in Mead’s Dayton Ohio office with employee representatives present. Truman Wiles represented Kingsport Division employees.
Rep Wright of Texas will be principal speaker at the Lee County Jefferson Jackson Day Dinner in Jonesville on Friday night. The event draws Democrats from Hawkins and surrounding counties with attendance to be noted by local officials and party members.
Senators Capehart and Sparkman back George D Ga le in refusing confidential copies of the Yalta Conference papers. Secretary Dulles announced plans to publish panels from the Roosevelt Stalin meeting in the Russian Crimea. George said he would not accept or disclose the documents, fearing leaks and accountability. Capehart aligned, while Sparkman supported publication or secrecy under State Department control. London The House of Commons voted 298 to 268 against Labour opposition and censuring Prime Minister Churchill over plans for hydrogen bomb talks. An amendment passed 299 to 268 required Paris accord ratification before a U S UK Russia summit. Churchill said talks should include West Germany and France, noting past illness stalled earlier efforts.
Mrs Gaines A Adams 47 of 1825 Linville Street died at 10 am after heart attacks. Funeral set for Broad Street Methodist Church with Dr Elfort Wiley Jr officiating. Burial in Gunnings Cemetery. Survived by husband Gaines A Adams, daughter Carolyn, son Don, and extended family. Survivors include father J S Mottern and three sisters.
Senate debate tightens as Republican leaders hedge on supporting a Democratic plan to cut personal income taxes while extending corporation and excise rates. Sen. Young of North Dakota signaled possible GOP backing, boosting the party’s count toward 49 Democrats.
London gossip columnists accuse Group Captain Peter Townsend of pressuring media as rumors swirl that Princess Margaret plans to wed him. Townsend, 40, says the princess has decided to marry him and will avoid interviews, after 16 months of public silence since his royal household transfer. London circles doubt the match but expect a fall wedding if consent is given.
Mrs Vergle Robinette aged 68 of 1696 Highland Street was brought to Holston Valley Community Hospital after a two car accident in the Long Island vicinity with injuries. Her husband Vanne Robinette was listed and released. Their son Henry Robinette aged 5 of Rewick was X-rayed and expected to be released in satisfactory condition. Investigator Hugh Birger was on scene reviewing the incident.
The Senate confirmed William E. B. Miller of Johnson City Tennessee as an additional federal judge for the Middle District of Tennessee. Miller, a Republican, will join Judge Elmer Davies in Nashville to ease a heavy docket and move from Johnson City to Nashville, ending a protracted dispute over his nomination.
Tennessee asked a U S appeals court to void an SEC order authorizing Dixon-Yates financing of 514 million dollars in common stock. The case centers on legality of the Mississippi Valley Generating Co contract to build 107 million dollar generating plants at West Memphis Arkansas and the Tennessee Valley Authority power supply changes.
A federal judge freed John David Provoo, 37, who had been sentenced to life for wartime treason after Corregidor. Judge Rossei Thomson dismissed the indictment citing government delays prejudicing Provoo’s chance for a fair trial and released him on recognizance, pending possible Supreme Court appeal. Provoo, once a prisoner of the Japanese, wept as court-appointed lawyers announced the decision after more than a month of hearings.
In New York, testimony begins in the Mickey Jelke trial as jurors hear about high society playboys and their call girls. The defense argues the government delayed the case to gain advantage, denying Jelke timely trial rights under the Sixth Amendment.
Former call girl Pat Ward poised as first witness in Jelke case. Assistant District Attorney Liss vowed to question her after openings. Ward, 21, testified in Jelke's first trial about falling in love with Jelke and sharing money from dates she arranged for him. Two children, David McNabb age five and Sarah Mae McNabb age three, drowned when the car driven by their mother, Wille Ruth McNabb, slid backward into the Tennessee River while she turned on a road near Marion Hamilton County. The mother escaped by swimming to safety. Hugh Downey, a former passenger, helped her out. The car was recovered hours later from ten feet of water by a wrecker assisted by Jon a Headview, son of Mrs McNabb, who helped attach a rope to pull it out.
Kingsport residents show laxity in meeting the tax deadline after it moved to April 15 this year. A local check with the Income Tax office indicates many have not yet filed or rushed to complete returns.
