A severe hailstorm struck a county in South Carolina Sunday night, killing a man aged around 10 and a 3 year old girl trapped beneath a collapsed concrete block house. The storm dumped up to 5 inches of hail in Batesburg and 4 inches in York, caused property damage, and blocked several miles of U.S. Highways as a cool air mass drifted in.
Firefighters consider artificial rainmaking as 400 workers battle two large wildfires in North Florida and South Georgia. The Foley blaze scorched tens of thousands of acres of timber and swamp land while the Okefenokee region shows signs of control. Backfires and new fire lines are built as winds ease, with rough totals of 70 000 acres burned in North Florida and extensive areas charred in Georgia.
Knoxville March 22 Vogel chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority board says a larger board may improve management and implement sound policy. About 50 060 Southern Bell Telephone Co employees in nine Southeastern states walked out at 4 a.m. after failed contract talks. Pickets stood outside offices as some workers left jobs and others did not enter. Union officials said negotiations continue despite the walkout with a no strike clause and wage issues at stake.

Gate City Virginia March 14 two men announce for the Republican nomination for sheriff. Lee Rey Baker Hilton has withdrawn from sheriff race. Howard K. Elliott of Nickelsville seeks treasurer. Baker explains crowded sheriff field and shifts to treasurer. Scott County Republican Committee meets March 19 at 2 pm in the courthouse to set date for county election.

Key figures Sen Humphrey and Treasury Secretary George Contend the measure would trim 820 from income tax for many, offset by repealed provisions and extended corporate rules. Administration and Democratic allies anticipate a close vote, with both sides predicting a narrow margin.
Washington: Senator Joete Song urged restraint and called for presidential judgment in Formosa while Senator Knowland pressed for intercepting a Finnish tanker en route to Red China.
