Railroad blamed for coal slump in pennsylvania turmoil
Washington March 12 AP Charges that the Pennsylvania Railroad sought to put the Roseville Coal Company out of business were made before the Senate committee investigating the bituminous industry. Thomas Sagle general manager testified the railroad bought coal during union unrest then withdrew a siding in 1926 after a Chicago conversation with Henry Owens purchasing agent. Penrod president Robinson Coal Co said Owens warned of not recognizing United Mine Workers and that the railroad would buy no coal unless the Apple posting occurred. A broader misery report on Pittsburgh and Central Pennsylvania coal regions was presented to the Senate Interstate Commerce committee as it expands its inquiry.
