Flowers Given Eight-Year Term
Former Alabama attorney general Richmond Flowers was sentenced to eight years in federal prison with a $10,000 fine after being convicted of conspiracy to extort funds from firms doing business in the state. Maryland Mississippi Colleges To Segregate
The Health, Education and Welfare Department ruled state colleges in Maryland and Mississippi are racially segregated and must submit plans to desegregate before the current school year ends in June. Federal funding could be cut for 14 schools failing to comply. Police Gun Down Bandit in Chattanooga Bar Siege
A man identified as Joseph Webb 25 of Gulfport Mississippi was shot dead by police after a bar gun battle in Chattanooga Tennessee. Webb one of three convicted bank robbers who escaped from federal marshals near Princeton Kentucky was killed while two other suspects Ethridge 32 Nashville and Walker 28 Indianapolis were detained. Marshals Parham Worthy robbed left handcuffed to a tree and a bystander Harold Wright was wounded and treated at Erlanger Hospital. Earlier Bowling Green Kentucky police said the trio had held a family hostage for almost two days before escaping with cash and clothing.
