Kingsport Safety Director R. L. Eisenbise urged no violence in the Kingsport Press strike. He stated the Department of Public Safety will enforce all statutes to protect people and property and seeks full cooperation from management labor and others.
About 1600 Kingsport Press employees walked out in an unauthorized strike with picket lines around the plant. Union officials said talks failed after more than 100 bargaining sessions and the plant remained open. Police prepared to prevent violence as the morning shift ended and late picketing continued downtown.
Kingsport authorities say two teen girls incorrigible in juvenile care set fire to the women's section of Blountville county jail. Dianne Brooks 17 and Elsie Mae Gibson 15 faced no further action. Fire caused about 100 dollars in damage to mattresses and cell interiors before firefighters removed. Brooks had been sentenced to five to six years for robbing a beauty shop. Gibson awaits transfer to a girls school for truancy and running away.
President Kennedy told Congress that unemployment is wasting lives and unrealized production. He urged tax cuts and other measures to spur growth and job expansion, warning the rate could reach 6.1 percent with 5.5 million unemployed by 1967. The report covers manpower use since World War II and future forecasts.
Washington reports the House ready to approve a four year extension of the draft law. Some members urge a two year limit and lowering the top enlistment age to 22, but faces opposition. Rep Henry Reuss calls draft a necessary evil and cautions on overcommitment. Chairman Carl Vinson may oppose, noting the President can lower the draft age if needed.
A 34 year old Kingsport man Bob Fritz was to be arraigned in General Sessions Court for two murders at Kayo Service Station in Old Kingsport. Investigators say Fritz refused a polygraph and a warrant also charged Kenneth Wayne Light 23 with first degree murder for the same killings. Light waived extradition in Hazel Park Michigan and will return to Kingsport.
