Sun Powered Spacecraft Proposed for Mars Mission

Pasadena California United States NASA funded JPL feasibility study proposes a sun powered unmanned spacecraft with solar panels totaling thousands of square feet. The craft would use small thruster engines to reach Mars in 30 days then enter orbit, or extend to Jupiter by 1976. John W. Shartis says solar missions could be cheaper than chemical flights. development could begin within 32 months after NASA approval.

Warm Wind Covers Part Of Nation

Nationwide weather shows warm spring like trend with mild southerly winds from the Gulf and Pacific breezes. Temperatures reach near 48 in Montana and spread to the Canadian border while Palm coast Oregon sees heavy rains easing after a three day Pacific storm. Rainfall drenched Cape Blanco and the Bay Area with Willamette Valley streams flooding briefly. Myrtle Point schools closed as Coquille River rose four feet above flood stage. Overall sunny, mild and dry conditions expected elsewhere with scattered showers in the Northwest and sprinkles along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Whole Town Evacuated For Loading Incident

CHATILEMONT Massachusetts authorities evacuated 4200 residents after a derailed Boston and Maine train threatened chlorine release. State troopers and volunteers went door to door, neighbors alerted by telephone, as crews secured the scene and assessed danger to prevent toxic exposure.

Prisoner Admits On-Leave Plan To Harm Woman, Kill

In Mississippi, Hubert Everett Rawls, confined for a grave crime, confessed while on 10 day leave from Parchman Prison that he roamed a lover’s lane near Dixie Road gravel pit to watch couples and possibly shoot them. He admitted intent to kill both the boy and girl, then butcher the girl, but found no one there. Rawls, who was on leave from the state penitenary at the time of the slaying, had previously received consecutive life terms after pleading guilty to the case involving a 13-year-old girl. Police quoted him as discarding the item later and returning to relatives’ home.

Firemen Fight Blazing Tin Plant in Memphis

Memphis firemen battled smoke at the Tin Compress and Waste Materials Co. injuring M. V. Nobsey who was hospitalized. Thirteen pieces of equipment responded as crews contained the blaze. Tennessee Valley Rain Up in February Despite Snow Melt

KNOXVILLE UPI rainfall in the Tennessee Valley during February averaged 5.4 inches, about an inch above the formal rainfall since September 1965. TVA said streams rose as heavy mid February rains and melting snow fed them, marking above average for the first time in months. Highlands North Carolina logged 13.42 inches of rain for the month while Tazewell Virginia recorded 2.35 inches.
