Sheriff orders removal of rickets from road patrol and accuses plant officials of employing 75 special deputies paid by the plant. Rayon officials deny the charges as investigations unfold.
Elizabethton Tennessee AP report says Sheriff J M Moreland repudiates his resignation to Attorney General Ben Allen claiming Allen tricked him. Moreland states resignation dated March 10 and that the letter was publicized by Allen today without his word. Grand jurors called for Monday to consider charges against union pickets amid labor disturbances at American Bemberg and Glanzstoff mills.
Pi An order to cease highway picketing by United Textile Workers followed by Sheriff J M Moreland’s resignation amid claims officials were pressured by a group to “shoot down” pickets. A 76 citizen petition to oust him was withdrawn. deputies’ pay and roles disputed as union and mills clash over recall. Page four.

Mrs Howard Adkins of Washington DC died after an auto crash two miles north of McKenny Virginia while being moved to Petersburg. Her companion Miss Mary E Mayes of Greensboro NC was seriously injured and hospitalized in Petersburg. the car skidded on wet pavement while trying to pass a bus and rolled over several times pinning Mrs Adkins beneath. The pair were en route from Washington to Greensboro.
Washington March 8 AP Justice Edward Terry Sanford died after a brief illness of under three hours. He collapsed in a dentist’s office en route to a noon Supreme Court gathering. uremic poisoning was given as the cause. Funeral planned for Knoxville as court adjourns Monday.
Senators press in Washington over Grundy links to the American Tariff League News Bureau. Senator Harrison seeks removal of those who worked with Grundy, while Moses refuses censorship and Nye weighs a bid to bar Grundy from his seat over the 1926 Pennsylvania Republican Primary.
Richmond March 8 The general assembly passed the 101 million dollar budget for 28 months, killed the chain store tax bill, and adjourned sine die after four conferees failed to reconcile differences. C H Morissett salary set at 10000, with other small raises and new inspector positions. The chain store fight ended with the senate stance prevailing, lawmakers departing Richmond after a turbulent final day.
In Blairsville Georgia 65 year old Hugh Brown faces murder charges after shooting Edith Miller 25 as she shielded her father Jim Miller 55 from his shotgun fire near the disputed land line between Brown and Miller properties. Edith died instantly Brow n says Miller approached with a gun. The feud, settled previously in court, involved a trespass dispute over land encroachment.
Washington article reports Mrs. Alice G. Winter, former president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, argues that the terms friend wife and friend husband reflect a trend. She calls friendship essential to fulfilling a wife’s enduring work of making happy homes.
