Tennessee swine producers are urged not to quit the business as February hogs head to market in July, a peak price period. University of Tennessee economists say futures markets could secure about 20 dollars per hog in July, with production costs near 17 dollars, yielding strong returns. They advise hedging with December futures and considering fall feeding, stressing proactive planning over reacting to current prices.
Tennessee farmers reported a new state high in livestock value at 493 432 dollars, while cattle values rose and hogs declined slightly. Cattle and calves totaled 2 354 000 head, milk cows fell 2 percent to 302 000, and beef cattle rose 2 percent. Hogs numbered 1 111 000 with value per head at 92 dollars. Sheep and lambs totaled 35 000 and 648 000 dollars in value, with chickens and turkeys also showing declines in total value and per head prices. Tennessee ranked 16th in cattle and calves and 3rd in sheep and lambs among states.
The Greeneville Tobacco Experiment Station finds half a pound of d-F2.4 fertilizer per square yard yields best plants. For yield and leaf value, Burley 21 X Ky 10 and Burley 2L X Ky 10 show strong performance, with disease resistance and high grade quality. Growers should rotate crops if possible and select varieties suited to their farm conditions.
The Agriculture Department announced eligibility for farmers in nine southern states to substitute soybeans or other crops for corn due to blight risk and seed shortages. Decisions for other states are pending with county ASC committees granting approvals and maintaining planting history credits and continued corn support payments for qualifying farmers.
Washington reports the Agriculture Department will cut payments on set aside acres that show below average productivity under 1971 price support programs for feed grains cotton and wheat. Enrollment runs March 3 to April 9 with caps linked to how far below average the set aside land performs.

Virginia Purebred Sheep Breeders Association outlines goals for industry growth at annual meetings. Leaders Kenneth Jessie and John Porterfield helm Southwest Virginia Branch with members across the state while George A. Allen notes a decade of declining sheep numbers but rising lamb output per animal.
The Plant Variety Protection Act provides patent like protection for breeders who develop or discover new plant varieties. It will be administered by the U S Consumer and Marketing Service. The law was signed in Atlanta and aims to shield plant breeders nationwide.
The Scott County ASC office began accepting applications March 1 for feed grain and wheat programs. Chairman Charlie Stanley urged producers with a feed grain base or wheat allotment to review how participation fits their operation and to maintain non serving bases to qualify for benefits. A 4 percent corn nonplanting would reduce bases next year, and substitutions between wheat and corn are allowed to protect allotments. Signup ends April 9.
Tennessee crops report shows higher storage of wheat oats barley and sorghum on June 1 compared with four years earlier, while corn and soybeans declined. Corn stocks reached 4,401,000 bushels, down 16 percent from last year and the lowest January total on record.
Gate City Virginia Farmers Home Administration aims for 40 million in home loans this fiscal year. State director H A Goodling reports from Roanoke that loans are available at 3 to 4 percent with an income limit of 4000 dollars. Eligible rural residents may use funds to buy, build, improve or repair homes and sites.
