Farm Bureau Chief Opposes Acreage Poundage Plan

Washington County Farm Bureau president Beryle Hunt denounces federal acreage poundage for tobacco and other crops as dangerous centralized power. He cites past attempts by the Secretary of Agriculture to push for quotas and dictatorial authority, urging farmers to vote against such programs and warn of potential 1967 price impacts.

Virginia tobacco acreage plan outlined for three point three year supply

Scott County Extension Agent Kenneth Reynolds explains a referendum on the acreage poundage program for Virginia tobacco. The plan aims to guarantee crop insurance against droughts and other losses while allowing overmarket up to ten percent after 1966. Growers with small allotments receive similar notices, with minimum farm allotments protected by specific limits.

Different Laws Involved For Burley Acreage Cuts

Growers should not confuse how acreage can be cut under two laws. The old plan cuts 15 percent while the newer acreage poundage system reduces 6.3 percent, with the Tennessee Burley Tobacco Referendum Committee explaining two distinct laws govern quotas. The old law enforces a strict supply-demand formula, while the new system, approved by Congress, allows gradual reductions and assigns each grower a share of overproduction to prevent excessive yield hikes.
