Rising waters from Pittsburgh to the Ohio Valley forced hundreds from their homes. Forecasters warned of crest levels while agencies mobilized Red Cross relief efforts and Coast Guard support. Bridges closed and transportation disrupted as communities braced for record flood figures near Cincinnati and Louisville.
Rose Bampton a leading Metropolitan Opera soprano will perform as the final artist in the year’s concert series by Programs Inc. at the Dobyns Bennett Theatre. The program includes selections by Russian lyricists, French composers and Wagnerian pieces. Bampton, who has built an international career, previously appeared with major opera houses and has performed widely abroad.
The White House announced Wil. Davis will replace Fred Vinson as head of the economic stabilization board. Davis, chairman of the Board, will join George W. Taylor as part of the War Labor Board to balance wages and prices.

Memphis residents moved to higher ground as engineers battled flood threats along the White River and the Mississippi. Army engineers from Camp Gruber aided levee work in Woodruff Monroe and Prairie counties while Red Cross provided tents stoves and shelter for hundreds of homeless families in Lauderdale County Tennessee. Flood conditions in the Mississippi delta showed slight improvement but bottomland waters along Coldwater and Yazoo rivers were expected to rise further for several days.
The Weather Bureau forecast the Ohio River would crest at 46 feet about noon tomorrow, 18 feet above flood stage. Rain had ceased, but the river rose at about one tenth of a foot per hour, with 44.6 feet recorded at the upper gauge. Hundreds of families were evacuated, and relief agencies prepared to move more, as city officials and military aided in protection and removal along riverfront areas.
Kingsport merchants sponsor a course for employers and workers on job training. J B Morgan will teach March 12 to 16, with a repeat due to demand. Mrs Louise Alison says the second session targets business men unable to attend earlier classes. A follow up on human relations training is planned for graduates. Classes meet in Holston Drug Company party room.
Kingsport motorists have two and a half days to purchase 1845 motor vehicle licenses without penalty. City recorder J. R. Pecktal warns that after noon Saturday owners without tags face arrest and fines. Tags cost $2 and are sold at the Treasurer’s office in City Hall. required for residents and workers bringing their car into the city.
A Greeneville sailor, Roland Osborn Rich Jr., seaman first class, was reported killed in action in the European theater. His mother, Mrs. Nora Black Rich Schrader, lives in Greeneville. An Army release also lists Captain Gunnar Teijman Jr. of Johnson City as a prisoner of war.
The Sullivan Johnson County Medical Society will meet tonight at 7 pm at the Hotel General Shelby in Bristol Virginia with Dr Frederick Reiss of Co University and New York City dermatologist as speaker. His topic is Fungus Manifestations. Members and physicians in adjacent counties are invited to attend. Dr Reiss is in Bristol today for a dermatology clinic at Kings Mountain Boapstat.
Eastern front distance to Zellin reported as 32 miles. Western front distance to Cologne given as 288 miles. Italian front distance to Reno River listed as 644 miles.
Huntington W Va reports waters rising to around 56.9 feet at Dam 28 with forecasts showing 60.5 feet soon. Forecasters estimate the crest may surpass the 1937 inundation level, as flood stages climb far above normal.
Allied forces push northeast from Pistoia toward Bologna gaining five miles and seizing Castel D'Aiano and Castelnuovo as Brazilian units advance toward Castel D'Almo. More than 1,200 prisoners taken. operation began March 3 with 20 minute artillery barrage and air support. Local German resistance beaten back as Fifth Army eyes the Pistoia Bologna Highway.
Soviet forces intensify assault on Kuestrin on the Oder, pushing into northeastern defenses and signaling a widening drive toward Berlin. Reports quote German broadcasts claiming heavy artillery and 21 hour barrages as tanks push north from the Carpathians toward Stettin and the Oder line.
Kingsport city board approved an emergency garbage disposal ordinance requiring dry waste to be kept in sealed containers in alleys for collection with tops fastened when deposits are made. Wet garbage is barred from these boxes. The board also reviewed street widening costs and accepted bids for water and building improvements.
Paris AP reports the American Third Army driving Germans back to within 13 miles of the middle Rhine while the First Army presses within three miles of Bonn. Fourth Armored Division nears Coblenz after a 37 mile sweep. 50,000 Germans in a pocket west of the Rhine.
Marines launch an all out offensive to drive Japanese from the northern cliffs of Iwo Island while ten American divisions in the Philippines reorganize for the final Luzon campaign. Tokyo radio reports air raids on Japan and recon on Korea as Chinese troops advance toward Lashio in Burma.
Mason and Dixon drivers voted to end a four day strike that halted 1 850 000 pounds of freight mostly war supplies. The meeting among strikers union representatives and company officials produced a 56 to 17 vote to return to work. The truce ends with conditions noted by participants.
Tennessee must provide about 13 million dollars extra to match federal postwar highway aid over three years. Officials C W Phillips and W M Duncan warn of a growing deficit as revenue estimates fall short. The plan would fund 10.09 million annually, with state funds covering maintenance and a large debt burden amid recent bond authorizations and potential shifts from the general fund.
The Market Group To Elect Officers will meet Saturday at 1 p m at Padle Station WPT for officer elections. Raymond Fisher president of Indian Springs announced eligibility rules for voters who have sold 12 or more times since the Curb Market opened in June 1944. Three officers and five standing committee heads will be chosen, with Miss Isadora Williams from the University of Tennessee attending to lead a producer education program after the meeting.
