Triumph Smokes plans New England rollout of a lettuce based cigarette substitute with no nicotine or tobacco. A model named Sandy Hastler poses with the lettuce product and its cigarette form, which resembles a regular filtered cigarette yet offers a sweeter aroma and distinct taste.
United Press International reports Gustav Heinemann has been elected West German president on the third ballot in West Berlin defeating Defense Minister Gerhard Schroeder by six votes. The 69 year old Social Democrat and former justice minister is praised for honesty and courage, with a record including resigning as interior minister in 1950 over Adenauer policy and service in WWI. Heinemann has four children and 12 grandchildren.
A Navy court of inquiry at Coronado hears testimony on the Pueblo incident. Enlisted sailors report seeing ten orange bags packed with documents on deck outside the dock as legal arguments consider if North Korea could be attacked, given the seizure of the Pueblo on January 28, 1968.
Western officials say the Berlin flare-up likely aims to deter serious escalation and avoid total shutdowns of vital air corridors. The dispute over West Germany’s status persists as Soviet East German pressures continue, with warnings that harassment could widen disruptions and trigger further maneuvers around Berlin and its lifelines.
Spacewalker planned on Apollo 9 astronauts Schweickart fell ill with nausea and vomited twice. Commander McDivitt discussed with ground control and recommended cancelling the spacewalk. Medical officials could not determine the cause, ruling out motion sickness and most other possibilities.
