Tear gas dispersed unemployment day demonstrators near the White House. Six leaders were arrested after clashes with police. Minor disorders occurred across several cities including Washington London and Berlin during the international unemployment day observance.

President Hoover had told police to permit demonstrators to pursue their program if they remained orderly and did not trespass on Federal Park land, outlining a restrained approach to public protest.
Demonstrations erupted in American cities with Waterbury police arresting four including a woman, Worcester seeing five communists detained, and about 25 000 in Union Square New York singing the Internationale. Europe reports clashes and arrests of leaders, London skirmish injuring five, Dublin detaining four communist readers.
In Berlin police and unemployed clashed at municipal enrollment offices where 3000 unemployed gathered. Riots also reported at Hamburg Presslau and Kiel with demonstrations at Antwerp Stockholm Copenhagen Vienna Budapest Manchester and Paris where a few hundred workers struck. Leaders were arrested and demonstrators dispersed in several cases.
Across the world the event sparked limited disturbances. In London about 2,000 gathered at Tower Hill planning to march to the Mansion House. Paris saw scattered strikes among subway workers and taxi drivers while Berlin remained quiet. In Itzehoe Germany a communist rally ended after a brief clash with police. order was restored within half an hour.
London March 6 AP British naval estimates for 1930 show a net total of 51,739,000 pounds, down from 55,865,000 in 1929. A. V. Alexander notes reductions stem from trimming 1928 29 programs in line with Kellogg pact and peace measures, cancelling five vessels from 1928 and twelve from 1929, including cruisers submarines and destroyers, with remaining submarine decisions postponed until after the London conference.

Chicago police report the slaying of John Oberta known as the Dingbat, a boss in the Saltis beer trade who allied with the O Donnell clan. Bodyguard Sam Malega also killed. police link the attack to a rising gang feud sparked after Frank McErlane warned the war was on. Oberta’s history includes back of the yards roots and a marriage to Big Tim Murphy’s widow.
Paris March 6 AP The French delegation to the naval conference headed by Aristide Briand foreign minister in the new Tardieu cabinet left for London at noon. Their chief M Tardieu received an ovation at the station. He postponed his return to visit flooded areas in Southern France tomorrow and may reach the naval conference by Tuesday or Wednesday.
Arthur T. Hadley, former president and president emeritus of Yale University, died in Kobe Japan. Hadley who led Yale during the 1920s and 1930s lived to be 105 years old. He shaped university policy and expanded the faculty and campus during his tenure. He later returned to the university in advisory roles.
Floodwaters across Beziers to the Garonne receded leaving ruin across Toulouse and Tarn valley. More than 300 killed and 10,000 to 12,000 homeless amid billions in property damage. Moissac and Montauban worst hit with extensive destruction reported. many rescued groups on rooftops or trees without food for days. Relief workers rushing to reach survivors.
Jim McMillan former Illinois football star will meet Dick Shikat in Miami on March 17 to contest Shirat s claim to the heavyweight wrestling title promoter Elwood R Rigby announced. Shikat is recognized as champion in New York and Pennsylvania while Sonnenberg challenges his claim in other states.
President Hoover requests $150000 more in expenses for the U S delegation to the London naval conference, raising the total beyond the $200000 originally allowed. The appeal aims to cover travel, accommodations, and related costs as delegates prepare for ongoing negotiations.
In Elizabethton Tennessee on March 6, about seven cars and a bus carrying workers from American Bemberg and American Glanzstoff mills were stoned by strike pickets on the Hampton road. No injuries reported. Mill operators say the event is a demonstration of unemployed workers, not a strike, with plants not forced to curtail operations.
The Senate coalition of Democrats and Republican Independents faced renewed pressure as final votes loom in the tariff bill battles. A roll call showed a sugar duty increase to two cents a pound by 47 to 39, after an earlier 48 to 38 defeat of a 2.20 cent proposal. Nearby measures on lumber, cement, bricks, hides, and leather remain to be decided amid narrow margins. Trousdale Biddix, a Black porter at Kay Jewelry in Nashville, confessed to stealing more than $4,000 in diamond rings and watches over sixteen months. Police recovered part of the jewelry from Biddix, who allegedly sold the items for about one-tenth of their value.
