Tennessee union and Ford Motor glass plant management reached a settlement today averting a strike. The UAW local with 2100 members cited safety and health concerns as the dispute’s core. Agreement deemed satisfactory to both sides.

Tremors Felt In Tiptonville And Nearby Areas

Tremors rattled windows and furniture in Tiptonville and jolted residents across southern Illinois to Memphis. Clergy urged reflection as tremor, felt for about 45 seconds in Union City and Pinson, prompted widespread phone line jams. No major damage reported.

Auto Accidents Reported In Hartin Area

Two people treated at Holston Valley Community Hospital for injuries from traffic crashes. M. L. Steele, 48, of Atlanta, suffered a hand injury in a collision near Old Kingsport. Earl McGlothlin, 25, Route 6, Kingsport, treated for a possible back injury after a Beeson Well Road crash. Both released after treatment.

Mars Telescope Balloon Returns After 77k Foot Flight

Giles County reports a balloon borne telescope reached 77000 feet above earth then landed on rolling farmland 10 miles north of here. Princeton astronomer Martin Schwartzchild supervised recovery with 16 scientists, noting the 30 foot instrument weathered the trip and will be shipped to Norwalk Connecticut for study expecting results in about two weeks.

Fire at Sherwood Restaurant In Lyle Causes Minor Damage

Town Marshal Clarence Berg spotted activity near town and later witnessed a break in at the Sherwood Restaurant. Firemen answered a call at 4 03 a m Sunday and arrested John Kohnke 18 for breaking in. Damage estimated light to moderate due to grease catching fire near charcoal broilers.

Weekend Wrecks Kill 8 In Tennessee. Traffic Toll Rises

A violent weekend across Tennessee records eight deaths from multiple wrecks on Friday through Sunday. In Campbell County a 41-A crash leaves four injured and prompts a 45 mph night speed limit. Separate crashes near Nashville Clarksville and Jasper claim lives including two Campbell soldiers, a Leitchfield Ky man, a Liberty Tenn woman, and four other victims. Authorities vow intensified patrols and cross-county cooperation to curb further tragedies.

Thieves Continue To Plague Kingsport Area

Detective Captain James Broyles reports a string of thefts in Kingsport last week totaling nearly 700 in goods. A 24 inch brass cross and two communion sets from Mafair Methodist Church were stolen, plus nine radiators from junked cars at Kingsport Auto Parts, a camera from a car near Homestead Hotel, and a 50 watch from the Civic Auditorium.

City Court Public Drunkenness and Fines

City Court records list Mel vin Collins Robert Jones Reed Jefferies Abe Meade Reed Bellamy Tommie Thompson and Otis Christian all fined 20 dollars each for public drunkenness plus Fort Robinson officials Amos Barnett Clarence Atkins and Keith Trent forfeited 20 dollar bonds along with Reed Bel lamy and 29 2101 Flanders Street. Hiram C Quillen forfeited 45 dollar bond for public drunkenness and possessing whisky. Maurice Leon Steele forfeited 25 dollar bond for failing to yield right of way. Burns Cause Death Near Fayetteville Farm

Arthur W. Stewman aged 77 died at a hospital Sunday four weeks after being burned while processing lard at his Fayetteville farm home. He had been hospitalized since the incident.
