Tennessee farm livestock values rose to 16.05 million dollars on January 1, up 3 percent from last year and 4 percent from 1967. Cattle herd remained 2.303 million head with value at 18.5 million, milk cows fell slightly, beef cows reached a new high of 922,000, hogs and pigs declined 7 percent to 927,000, and the per head value averaged 326.60.
Tennessee reports a record low lamb crop for 1968 with 43 000 head, down from 35 000 in 1967, and breeding ewes on farms at 47 000. National totals show a 4 percent drop to 14 416 000 head from 15 008 000 in 1967, while farm stock values and poultry inventories shift modestly. Tennessee ranks 16th in cattle and calves, 31st in sheep and lambs, with turkeys rising slightly in value.
NASHVILLE The 1368 calf crop in Tennessee is estimated by the Tennessee Crop Reporting Service at 1,307,000 head, up 1 percent from 1967. The count reflects fewer cows and heifers on hand but more calves born in 1968, with regional gains highest in the southern states.
Scott County 4-H held its club and county level public speaking contest at Hiltons Elementary School. Senior division winners include Scott County entrants and a group will compete at Abingdon in April. Junior division winners from Hiltons and nearby clubs advance to 4-H Camp, with multiple youths listed as participants and ready to present their self assembled topics.
In Hawkins County 4H Club public speaking contest held Saturday in Rogersville, Bridgette Ryan won the senior girls division and with Keith Davis took the senior boys prize to advance to the district contest at the University of Tennessee. Bridgette’s 10 year old sister Marietta won the girls cloverleaf for 9 1 year olds and defeated junior girl Jane Hawthorne in a runoff. boys cloverleaf winner Kirk Talley also beat junior runner John Horner in a runoff.
United Press International reports on farm practices to optimize tobacco and cattle production. Emphasis lies on introducing a new bull gradually, selecting resistant varieties like Burley 21 and 37, and ensuring proper conditioning, feeding, and pasture integration to prevent black shank disease. Plant bed prep and soil fertility are highlighted.
