Eddyville Ky March 3. Two men, Bonnie Griffin 24 and Arnold Powell 22, were executed in the Western State Penitentiary electric chair after confessing guilt in a slaying case. Griffin burned at 12:05 am. Powell died four minutes later. Warden Jesse Buchanius reported both men showed no emotion and stated they were ready to go.
Disjointed last minute wires report a push to raise payrolls for highway patrol personnel in Nashville. A March 1 dispatch notes the Mississippi general assembly considering a bill to boost state patrol staffing and enforce new traffic laws.
Secretary of Commerce Harry L. Hopkins named Gen. R. E. B. Wood of Chicago as temporary advisor on business relations for about four months. Wood, former Sears Roebuck executive and ex- Army officer, will help gauge how government and business can cooperate, with duties limited and no title. Gene Wells of Kingsport and 17 county prisoners escaped the Blountville jail Wednesday night using a makeshift rope. Wells, the seventh to surrender, faces two more days to serve before release, while others remain at large or recaptured. Deputies believe the breakout aimed to reach Wells’s wife and newborn at Community Hospital as officials search for the remainder.
Washington March 3 AP The house rapidly passed a 499 million dollar army appropriation bill to fund operations for the year and expand the air corps with 78 new airplanes. The measure includes modernization of equipment, anti aircraft guns and semi automatic rifles, plus strengthened seacoast defenses. Senate leaders urged close scrutiny of foreign policy amid warnings from Senator Nye of possible propaganda driven moves toward war.
Rajkot India March 3 Mohandas K Gandhi began a hunger strike to press for administrative reform in Rajkot native state. He vowed a fast unto death unless the ruler Dharmendrasinhji granted a voice in government as communal riots in Lucknow caused two deaths.
