Kilgore in March observed a clean up after a ranger raid led by Tom Hickman. More than thirty people, including two escaped convicts, were jailed in Longview as Mayor Malcolm Crim endorsed the action and vowed Kilgore would be an orderly oil town.
In Russelton a mining town, a man Frank Daniel his wife and three children were burned to death when their home burned early today. A fourth child survived by leaping from a second story window but fractured her left leg.
In Memphis on March 3 AP reports Rt. Rev. Theodore Bratton bishop of Mississippi calls Al Capone kind hearted but notes his gang life reverses that trait. Bratton cites second hand acquaintance with Capone and a mutual link to a physician.
In Bruceton Tennessee an unidentified man and a woman identified as Mrs John Burns 40 of Bruceton were burned to death when an overturned automobile trapped them late last night Sheriff J Clint Butler said Mrs Burns husband a N C and St L Railway shop worker identified her body by beads she wore He added the car was Burns property and he was summoned from work the companion was burned beyond recognition
Edna May Cooper, a Hollywood actress and endurance flier, who had been missing for a week, was found injured and wandering in Carmel near Monterey. She told police she believed she was in Santa Monica after leaving Los Angeles. A Monterey taxi driver located her.
Paul Whiteman known as the jazz king wins a divorce from his wife Mildred Whiteman stage named Vanda Hoff. Desertion cited. Judge J Sullivan in Chicago superior court grants the decree. Mrs Whiteman receives 600 dollars weekly alimony and three life insurance policies totaling 80000 dollars with premiums paid. Whiteman gets custody of their seven year old son Paul for three months each year.
Senator H C Anderson chairs the finance committee and urges reexamination of Tennessee's land tax as temporary aid amid a statewide revenue squeeze. Proposals include broader excise tax shifts and a gross sales or luxury tax while a revised appropriations bill trims about three million dollars from the administration plan.
Lieutenant General Edgar Jadwin, 65, retired chief of the army engineers, died at Gorgas hospital after a cerebral hemorrhage. He had come to Panama to head a committee on an interoceanic canal and new locks for Nicaragua or the Panama Canal. He was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania and graduated from West Point in 1890. The body will be shipped to the United States aboard the transport St Mihiel along with Major General George LeRoy Irwin.
Tennessee is mostly cloudy tonight with fair Wednesday and little temperature change. Virginia expects mostly cloudy spells tonight and Wednesday with possible snow flurries in the extreme west and little temperature change. Greeneville Tenn March 3 Pi Looney Holt 24 charged with holdup and murder of Jerome Miller a Washington College merchant. Holt is in Washington County jail at Jonesboro after being arrested last night at Ed Newton home near Walnut NC by Sheriff E H Ren Twadley and Washington and Madison county deputies. Officers search for Holt's companion.
Former U S Senator David S Baird announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor of New Jersey He had served as a U S Senator by appointment after Walter Edge resigned and before Dwight W Morrow won the seat The announcement came from Camden New Jersey on March 3.

Five machine gunners attacked the Blue Island gambling house owned by James Hackett. William Mayer 45 was killed and Hilario Rodriguez wounded as a 15 pound dynamite bomb failed to explode. Police view it as a syndicate effort to muscle into Blue Island gambling territory. attackers fled after shooting Rodriguez and Mayer.
New York police link Vivian Gordon to a blackmail scheme in which she recruited women to assess social status and finances of escorts. District Attorney disclosures allege threats against her lawyer John A. Radeloff and ex-convict Samuel Cohen, with both held on $50,000 bail as material witnesses.
Mrs Myrtle A Bennett 35, widow, on trial for murder of her husband, wept on the stand as her mother Mrs Alice Adkins testified about the fatal shooting after a bridge game quarrel on September 29, 1929. Judge demanded a recess until the defendant could calm herself.
Nashville report states Rogers Caldwell and E. J. Heitzeberg used Caldwell and Company and the Bank of Tennessee to acquire homes. Timothy Donovan testified that Caldwell listed Brentwood Hall, a $500000 suburban home, as bank assets and paid about 1 percent rent before charging it off as a dividend. Heitzeberg’s $132000 home was partially funded similarly, as the legislative investigators pursued details.
