Washington June 30 A treasury attorney told congressional investigators that Alfred P Sloan Jr chairman of General Motors saved a very substantial sum on income taxes by forming the Rene Corporation of Jersey City N J to hold title to the yacht Rene. Kent said Sloan reported 2 140563 in income for 193? to 1938 with taxes paid 973804 and listed six-year yacht expenses of 277519. The treasury defended that the holding company assumed yacht obligations and owned stock including 30 900 common shares and 9 545 preferred. Roosevelt sent Morgenthau memo noting wealthy taxpayers using corporate yachts to dodge personal deductions.

In Darchm Miss 55 year old Jesse I S Tatum, once a church man and respected citizen, hanged himself in his prison bunk just days after being sentenced to life for slaying his first wife. Slayer Jeered When Brought Before Jurist
A New York crowd of several hundred, many women and children, jeered sculptor Robert Irwin as he appeared in homicide court on June 20.
